Yeah I guess. I paid like $5 for a 90 day supply of Protonix.
Prilosec and nexium didn't do shite for me.

I got prescription for 40 mg omeprazole and fill it using Goodrx. Around $20 for 90 pills. One pill a day and changed my life. Only time I get heartburn now (rare) is when I drink a lot of beer late in day AND eat a lot with the beer.

I've tried them all. I am on Dexilant now and it works the best for me.

Dr just prescribed Prilosec to me for a chronic cough. Told me my acid reflux was causing it. I thought he was dumb but I do have reflux issues so I filled the prescription. Guess what? My cough is 90% gone and no acid reflux anymore.
That's what I get for doubting the guy who went to school for 25 years.

I was using Nexium for a while. It really did work but then I suddenly began developing a hiatal hernia so I stopped the nexium and it got better.
Reason they put me on Prilosec. Was scoped.

Life changer. Nothing has worked but Omeprazole for me.

Doctor prescribed me Prilosec for heartburn issues. I don’t have pain or much discomfort but I clear my throat a lot. What’s worse is that I often get a hoarse voice after eating which makes conversations difficult.
I’ve tried improving my diet but cutting out all unhealthy foods (any refined carbs) and eating the right amount of calories isn’t helping.
I’ve read that Prilosec can be addictive and cause worse problems later on.
Any thoughts?
Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor. My redneck way of explaining what it does is to say that it greatly diminishes the mechanism that produces stomach acid. You still produce stomach acid but just to not as great a degree.
There is a lot of fear mongering out there with respect to PPIs. Personally, I say that if it helps you enjoy living your life, go ahead and take it. There is no proof or causation with respect to PPIs causing kidney failure or the like.
It's not "addictive," but some people use this term to describe how weaning off of it can be challenging due to the fact that there is rebound acid production the first few days after it leaves your system. You'll stop taking it then get bad heartburn and feel like you have to get back on it again, but it should subside in a few days. If you continue to struggle, just taper off slowly, and don't quit cold turkey.
Now having said all of that, PPIs reduce the amount of acid produced by your stomach. That means that your stomach/throat aren't likely to burn as much. That does nothing for the mechanical problem that causes the reflux (ie the LES not closing properly or opening at random times). There's more in your stomach than simply stomach acid and food hence bile/gastric juices will continue to bother you. You just may not feel it because those substances are not acidic.
That does not mean those substances do not cause harm. Evidence suggests that it is bile not acid that actually causes esophageal cancer, hence PPI usage generally does not lower your risk of cancer at all.
Because you are not in much pain, you likely won't get as much relief via a PPI as someone who, for example, can't lie down to sleep at night. I would expect the throat clearing and horseness issues to continue as those are not caused strictly by acid.

It's so like a doctor to prescribed a fricking pill to fix the symptom and not the underlying cause.
Chances are you have low stomach acid not too much. Low stomach acid causes that sphincter to stay open which allows acid to get into your esophagus.
The doctor had my mom on this shite for years. She was diagnosed with osteoporosis, so I got her off of it.
At first (4 to 6 months) she had occasional heartburn, but I had her take Betaine HCL before her big meals or as needed.
You don't take it forever. You take it long enough to help you get back to normal. In fact, mom doesn't take it anymore. No more heartburn.
Look up ways to support a healthy gut.
Eat more fibre, use Himalayan Pink Salt

May as well call it magic. I went from eating a large bottle of tums per month to not even using a bottle a year.
Also the following benefits.
Orange juice with no heartburn or indigestion
Peanuts and peanut butter with no heartburn or indigestion.
I could go on.
Whether it gives me Dementia almost doesn't matter to me.

You do not need a prescription. You can get 42 generic Omeprazole at Kroger for $16 and they work just fine.
Except with my prescription and insurance, I only pay like $5 for 90 Omeprazole

It's so like an OT poster to take his anecdotal family evidence and act like it's a one sized fit all solution for everyone.

Where do you get this?
I was drinking peppermint essential oil for a while. It worked but I knew it was not good for me so I got back on Omeprazole.
