Had a Cardigan Welch Corgy. Great dog. Smart, friendly, loyal. She'd like crazy, but we got that fixed. Groomer came to the house every 2 weeks. He used a blow dryer to dry her and blew against the grain of her coat. That lifted all the loose hair. Amazing difference with the hair in the house. Good for another 2 weeks.
Currently have a malty-poo mix. Single coat and no shedding. Extremely friendly and smart. Good with the grandkids. She won't get any bigger than 4-5 pounds. Just a pup (4 months) and still house breaking.

If you do get a dachshund don't let them jump up and down from high places like beds and couches. Get one of those little pillow stars if you want them to climb up next to you. No one ever told us that and I think it may have ended up messing up his back over time.

We've caught ours having spasms where his back legs wouldn't work because he jumped off the bed or couch. Definitely scary and makes you feel horrible. He doesn't jump on much these days.

Any dog with a long back will have this problem.

On the lighter side, I had a basset hound that would shake her head so hard she would give herself cauliflower ear.

How is that even possible?

You want a dog that is loyal, loves to be at your side 90% of the time, and will make you laugh like none other??

PUG - no other answer. I've had two, plus several relatives and friends who've had numerous. All agree.

And, BTW - I was a big dog owner/lover all my life - retrievers and labs - they're all a gift from God!

Girlfriend has a dachshund, and it's a pretty great dog. Doesn't really shed, has a very defined and funny personality, is well behaved, everyone thinks she's cute. And they live for a long time. Bella just turned 10, but they can live to be about 17.

When she has to take a shite she will grab her leash, when she's hungry she will push her bowl around or growl, if she wants more belly rubs she'll use her paws to do the "more" sign...essentially she's a good communicator.

And they're natural burrowers, so it's funny to watch her nuzzle her way under a blanket or pillows (or your arm).

ETA: Bruco's family has a pug who I think is pretty great too. He may have already posted that though.

Got my dachshund puppy when I was 21 at LSU. Not the best time as they are tough to potty train and can be a bit stubborn. Once he was trained, he's been fantastic. He will bark when someone knocks on the door but once he sees the person, he will make friends quickly (sits in their lap instead of mine or my wife's). He turns 14 this November and even though he has lost some of his hearing and sight, he is still healthy and enjoys playing in the yard. Loyal as can be and a great dog to watch tv with (they love to snuggle up). Once he moves on, I am taking a break from a dog as it will be impossible to find one as great as he has been.

Coming in with another vote for dachshund. My family had a pug for 10 years. Great dog with a funny personality but shed like crazy. My fiance had a mini dach when we met and he won me over. Sadly he crossed the rainbow bridge recently. The house was way too quiet without the paw taps on the wood floor so we adopted this little girl a couple weeks ago. Few pics below of our old little guy and the new little lady.
