I’m not super into the “woo woo” Crystal healing stuff but just love the geology and chemistry and raw natural beauty.

Millions upon millions of years of time and pressure and heat, a silent symphony of chemistry and magic formed these incredible, natural works of art.

Fossils and fine, polished stones. I’m really interested in going out and mining some myself,
Does anyone know good places for that?

Any other rock hounds on the OT?

One of the guys I worked with out west found a piece of malachite sandwiched between 2 layers of azurite while we were in the field. It was pretty badass. We nicknamed it the ice cream sandwich.

I’ve named that one Monster’s Maw. Of the the crystals is loose but still locked in so it’s like a loose tooth you can wiggle. That’s been my biggest piece so far.

That and I have some really fantastic spheres and a couple other cathedrals. Looking for get another big piece next weekend

I haven't collected them as an adult but I got excited about them when I was 10 or 11 when I found an area that had a ton of quartz crystals in our sub-division. There was an empty lot with a creek running through it that was littered in one area with some really neat crystals. Lots of groups of small ones, some rather large and I found a couple of double terminated ones. It is one thing to see them as a kid and a completely different experience to actually pull them out of the ground being (likely) the first human to ever see them.

To this day when I am in Washington, I almost always swing by the Smithsonian and my primary stop is the gem and minerals hall in the Natural History museum.

Yep. Collector here but just got back into it about a year ago. Ebay has been great for things as have shows. Some states like Nevada and California have really good stuff and shops.

There’s a rock show at the Marriott next Saturday. He’s always got great stuff for me. My bigger acquisitions have come from there. If you know how to haggle and are willing to part with some cash you can get a steal.
I was able to snag Monster’s Maw for 20% of the asking price...but that’s because I have a good relationship with the guy and bundle stuff together for big purchases. I highly recommend attending
