Around here in central Alabama, it's almost always Cullman County (north of Birmingham) schools that will cancel classes first.
Notorious for cancelling classes just about every time there is even the slightest forecast of anything out of the norm.

What about around you?

I have no issues with schools canceling, most have 5-7 "emergency" days built into the calendar. If they feel uncomfortable with kids coming to school due to weather or driving conditions then cancel. It is cheaper than a lawsuit.
