BTW, I rode my bike to work today. I stopped at every read light and stop sign and used my hand signals at every turn.

You may actually be one of a kind, Salmon. Like I said, I ride too (probably must less city riding than you), and I honestly don't know one person who can say the same. Hell, I've only witnessed a very limited number of people do all that.

I'm very anal about following the laws when I ride because I'm aware of the bad perception of cyclists.

I hope that maybe someone will see me and maybe not get so angry at every cyclist.

But even when I do everything right, I still get yelled at on occasion.

You also see cyclist on bike forums reminding people of this. All too often you get someone that decides they want to start riding so they get a bike and take off without learning the rules. I've lived in several locations throughout the southeast and have always been active in either a triathlon club or bike club. Running red lights, blowing by stop signs, etc just is not tolerated on our rides. I'm not sure what areas you all are talking about but are these mainly commuters going to/from work or are these recreational cyclists?

Smokers cut you off, blow through red lights and stop signs? Then give you attitude for it?

While I don't hate bikers en masse, I have no objection to some state deciding it doesn't want to use modern roads made for cars for bike travel.

I live near a very popular cycling trail that is in central Florida. The road bike riders are extremely dangerous. They are basically cycling bullies who won't hesitate to endanger slower cycles and children who also use the trail. I've been riding this trail for 20 years and it has recently become a problem.

On Saturday, I was on it and stopped in a town called Winter Garden, there was a group of about 20 who were complete dicks to everybody.

15 deep riding behind someone just becuase they're on a bike. It's unsafe.

If there are not two or more of them, and he is not going the speed limit, honk his arse to the shoulder. I have ridden bicycles and raced them for the good portion of my adult life, they can choose to not be assholes.

Bike trails in the inner city are not the place to play Tour De France also there is usually a posted speed limit if they go over that they are breaking a law and need to be on the street. You can kill a child, injure adults and pets.

They don't even obey half the traffic laws.

May as well ban passenger vehicles and semis as well then...

All of this. I've ridden for 15+ years and it drives me nuts seeing people do this. Saw a guy get seriously hurt about 5 years ago and it was completely preventable if he'd been conscious of his surroundings and obeyed the law.

I go out of my way to avoid high traffic areas and/or specifically target times to ride when traffic is minimal. Even then you've got to keep your head on a swivel and obey the traffic laws.

Whoever started the thing where riding on the sidewalk is illegal, but riding on the street was is a complete and utter moron

Sales has it right. Unless there are bike lanes, they shouldn't be on the road

Eta: I used to ride my bike for 3+ hours every day recreationally. I wouldn't blame someone if I put myself in the position to get run over. I used the sidewalks or cut through neighborhoods 95% of the time

Cyclist. Always stop at red lights and usually just roll slowly through stop signs. Always try my best to represent us well

More dangerous riding on sidewalks than on streets. Share the road.

Most cyclist do obey the laws. Just like any other sport or hobby, a few bad ones give the rest a bad name.

If by "a few bad ones" you mean all the ones in NOLA, you'd be right.

It is more dangerous to ride around someone walking 3mph than have people swerve around you into oncoming traffic going 50? You're a smart one

Eta: And how many people walk on the sidewalk vs drive on the road?

They're worse on trails.

I have no issue pushing a biker over on a trail if he is riding like a dumbass.
