I'm not mountain climber, but October seems extremely late in the season to be on Everest. Isn't the climbing season in or around May?

Normal climbing season is April/May usually summit days are late May.
There is actually a fall climbing window but that is notmally only professionals and high level amateurs (no typical guided climbs) so you rarely see tourists. As mentioned this is base camp trekkers. There is not nearly the scrutiny on weather for trekking as there is for summit attempts.

For some reason I thought that climbing season on Everest was in the spring. Like April and May.
