The saying is trying to be clever but is backwards and makes no sense. 1 human year is equal to 7 dog years, yet if a human says “but in dog years Ive only had one” when referencing the 7 beers theyve drank, its backwards.

The point of the dog years thing is to make the dog seem as old as humans tend to live.
You multiply the dog's years by 7 to get their human years.
If the dog lives to 1 human year, it is 7 dog years.
What if the dog only lives to 1 dog year?

If a 35 year old has drank 70 beers over his life, that's equivalent to a 5 year old dog drinking 10 beers.

Dog years are what a dog lives. The 7x number is the approximate number of years the dog would be in age if it were human.
A 10 year old dog, if converted to the equal life of a human, is 70.
There is no such thing as 70 dog years. Dogs don't live that long.
