reasonable but who started all of this nonsense? The idiot who committed the crime and then the nosy citizen with a camera, so I side with the police not the one testing the law "enforcement". if my son ever did something like this,I would be upset. Either you are making a difference is a positive way or you're not. Be a good citizen, gezz! Some of you think this kid's efforts are meaningful because it holds cops to high standards. I don't think being a distraction is the right way to go about that cause. I think it plants the wrong seed because it's done in a spiteful way. I've attended a cop's funeral... I think everyone of you should if you haven't. The honor they show for one another is to be admired. Yet we endorse mickey mouse behavior because it's "lawful" and give little to know honor and mock a man's weight. I reckon that's what makes America great, we have the freedom and rights to be stupid and disrespectful to our government. In the end, I support that 'freedom"... but I rebuke the punk attitude and arrogance because it's a lack of appreciation.
but for real, kid is a poop stain. kid was lucky he didn't get bro-tazed, or worse shot. not all cops are bad.

I know I may be typing too fast for you, but try to keep up. The dipshits actions were illegal. It has little to do with the location, and everything to do with the taping

Bret Stephens salary is paid by the GOP?

I understand full well, that people on this board like it when cops get screwed with because usually they have had run ins w/ police and think all police are bad human beings running around with an attitude and gun. they seem to like seeing them get some kind of payback.
quote:Scruffy disagrees. It keeps cops honest. They should always act like they are being recorded.
I always start with the citizen's actions and attitude... the citizen had an objective and a camera. Fine, it's legal, but it's not cool and it just takes away from the police doing their job.
quote:Then he obviously hasn't learned his lesson and shouldn't be a cop.
And you can bet because of this experience this policeman is going to have more attitude with the public not less. Why would he? He is going to think is this another punk playing games with me?
quote:And the more they treat us like lesser citizens, the more people react like this. They started this. We are just finally responding.
the more police are disrespected, the more it plays into the hands of what we don't want..but you guys just keep on encouraging this kind of freedom...
quote:LEOs cannot be compared to any other profession. EVER.
Would you support this kind of childish behavior and disrespect in a classroom? Apparently so because America is full of it
The powers that they wield put them in a category all their own and they should be scrutinized MUCH more heavily than any other profession.

No...we get that. It's just largely irrelevant to this discussion.

I'm not saying the cop is in the right because he's not but wouldn't you be pissed if some kid comes to your place of work with the sole intention of attempting to get you fired?
If I was in a line of work where I had the power to not only detain American citizens, but shoot them down...I kind of think I'd be ok with being scrutinized heavily by those over whom I wielded such power. Assuming I had no intention of infringing on their rights, I can;t imagine I'd have any issue at all with being filmed provided they TRULY were not in the way and/or prevented me from doing my job.

I know I would.
I would too, but then I can't imagine anyone feels the need to watchdog my daily actions while I sit at the computer and do design work and media buys.

I hate these little shits who drive around with the sole purpose of provoking a cop to do wrong.
Eh...I agree they are dicks, but I actually appreciate their efforts in the same way I appreciate investigative reporters whose assholishness break open huge stories. Simply put, without anything to video tape and distribute on Youtbe, these guys would just be wasting their own gas. The fact that they are seemingly so able to find police who act the arse on camera is a bigger issue to me than them rolling around looking for trouble.

what does that have to do with google MAPS? What does that have to do with a public space?
I guess I was "typing to fast for you"

Really? I'm going to need a link to that. There should be no expectation of privacy in a public space.
Back on point, please explain how a public school is equal to a public space. I want to know if you realize that there is a difference

Whos talking about the privacy of the cop?
The citizen has every expectation if privacy. Just because a cop is one of the parties doesnt mean the citizen can be snooped on by a 3rd party
The NSA would love your insight!

What a douche - not a cop but the guy. Why frick with cops?

Doesn't mean he had to be a spineless coward like you would seem to have preferred. Keep ignoring the fact that one cop handled the situation properly and the other didn't. You realize that what this "punk" is doing is why some LEA's are having their officers wear cameras on their person during duty? Seems to have cut down on the complaints of LEO's making up laws instead of enforcing the ones that exist. Amazing what happens when being held accountable.

the citizen does not have an expectation of privacy in a public space (unless in Illinois, not sure if that has been overturned yet. Edit - was unanimously overturned)

Of course he was. He was driving in circles trying to get their attention, and he got it. They just shouldn't have given him the reaction that he was looking for. That's the problem.
But you absolutely cannot say that he wasn't trying to frick with the cops...that's apparently what he is known for, and he's apparently done this kind of shite before.

That was one of the worst analogies in the history of the written word. I'm still reeling at just how terrible that entire post was...
I'm am still getting a kick out of his examples. The thought of someone walking in circles feet away from a teacher, or a judge...priceless. I mean, yeah...it had nothing to do with this situation, but it does paint a wonderfully funny picture.

I think you are conveniently leaving out the fact that they are showing up with arrogance and disrespect (in this case circling ) with the intent to stir up the arse for ratings.
that's not genuine
Just go the local grocery store and be an arse to the clerk and manger, then film their reaction.
then jump on Yelp and tell the world how awful the customer service is at this store?
It's not genuine to me, it's provoked
Posted on 4/15/14 at 12:43 pm to TreyAnastasio
Obviously the kid filming is a douche, and could have handled the situation much better.
My concern is you have a cop who can't handle a simple situation without letting his emotions go bananas. That dude is not fit to be a LEO.
Edit: People in hospitality and retail have to deal with assholes all the time. If they lost their cool like this cop did, instant termination.

It does not matter who started it. This is not an argument between children. They both (camera guy and overweight cop) were in the wrong.
There is no law against being stupid so the camera guy gets a pass.
There are rules and responsibilities for how police officers are supposed to perform their duties and overweight guy failed at those responsibilites. He needs more training and to have a superior on his arse making sure it does not happen again.
Police who act like he did are the reason that many people do not trust law enforcement. Because everybody (myself included) are focusing on overweight cops actions. Not the other, more professional cop actions.
