Which one was in the right?

Wry complicated issue but I tend to side more with Sulla I guess. Both guys were assholes and great generals but I just feel like Sulla was the greater man.

Sulla’s actions directlybset the stage for the fall of the Republic. So, Marius.

Obviously Marius was the for the communist loving Plebs and Sulla for the rich capitalist pig Patricians. No win situation for today's snowflakes. Take both of their names from the history books and any artifacts in remembrance of them should be destroyed.

Guess that means this thread should be whacked.

Sulla.

Marius and Cinna forced him into marching on Rome. He was the legal consul.

Marius's actions after he became consul again justified Sulla.

Sulla was one of the greatest Romans who ever live and no, I'm not kidding.

Actually no.

Marius represented the commercial class as did Caesar.

Sulla represented the landed aristocracy.

The head count had little say in anything and were spread across the Centuries.

Wait. I thought Athens was your thing. Rome isn't in Athens.

I agree, Marius forced Sulla's actions because of his bitterness for the Senate choosing Sulla as general to fight MIthridates. Marius was trying to live off his successes in the Jugurthan War.

Marius had a gay nephew. Legionaires killed him. Marius decorated them.

Well, it’s often said the Jurtha war was the start of the rivalry because Sulla at great personal risk captured Jugurtha and Marius stole the spotlight

Homosexuality in the military has always been a huge no-no, even in highly homosexual cultures. The only group I can think of where it was in any way permissible was the Thebian Companions (150 lovers, reportedly the most elite fighting force of Ancient Greece). Otherwise it was a big no no as a huge moral killer. You can’t get men to risk their lives as easily when they’re too attached to those around them.

I was actually listening to something about the British navy with this. They said that on land, there would be gay sailors who were allowed to do whatever the duck they wanted as long as they didn’t like, get caught and no one gave a shot. But bono-sexuality on a man HMS ship was a death sentence.

Yeah, because it was Sulla that shifted the loyalty of the legionaries away from the state to the general.....

Also, Sulla tried very hard to strengthen the senate. He also forsake that Caesar would be s huge issue down the road

I’ve never heard this out in this way. Not saying your wrong, but everything I’ve ever read put him in the populares. Ambitious men keen to use the tribune of the plebs to gain power through passing popular laws. He certainly fits in with the Grachii brothers and with Caesar.

Commercial class was not in the Senate.

Well...... it officially wasn’t. The clientele situation certainly muddied every understanding modern audiences have when looking back. The senators almost 100% got kickbacks
