Sulla was correct that the foundations of the republic had been eroded, but the way that he went about correcting that was awful. Neither side was right.

What was he supposed to do? Lay down his command for a usurper and allow a mob to rule Rome?

What choice did he have? It was either that or rule by the mob as Marius attempted to use them to become a tyrant because he wanted a command so badly while despots such as Cinna were willing to use him for their own ends.
