A special interest. Which is textbook IMO. Has nothing to do with the right or left false paradigm.

I was just talking to someone today about how the ads this year were very mediocre and I feel like it's because comedy is dead

Comedy by its very nature almost always has a butt of the joke. But today there's almost nobody or no entity that can just laugh at itself and enjoy a decent humor.

so everybody does these commercials bending over backwards not to offend anyone except for the one or two groups that are still allowed to be the butt of jokes

That makes for a lot of bland advertising

It's easier to apologize than ask for permission. They knew what they were doing.

That apology was probably written minutes after the add was written. Genius and strategic planning! Add revenue towers the cost of apologizing for hurting fake feelings.
