Neighbor down the street has your stereotype travel ball kid. Lil’ punk looks around 10-12 years old. Always sporting:

Bender sunglasses
Flat bill team cap
Long shaggy hair hanging out the back
Gold chain
#16 wrapped on the side of jacked up golf cart
Name is Cayden

Dad is your typical baw:
Tattoo sleeve
< 6ft tall
Stocky yet about 40lbs overweight
Drives a RAM 2500 lifted
Goatee
Wedding ring tattoo he covers up from a previous marriage

Mom is exactly what you’d think. Sort of trashy, jacked up face, fake tits, ankle tat, way too tan, loud, etc.

It’s like you cut them right out of the template. I can’t help but give the kid some money when he goes around fundraising (begging).

Hope the kid is slaying the school girls because life will be downhill after high school. I chuckle everytime I see them drive by.

The obsession some have of one day playing high school baseball is strange to me. It doesn’t have the same allure of “Friday night lights”. My high school had a team but I couldn’t tell you much about it (such as were they good, who was on it, etc)

Travel baseball is the ruination of rec ball and baseball for youths in general. Most kids i know that played are now upperclassmen and are getting out of the sport from being burned out by travel ball. The parents and coaches are awful and suck the fun out of a great sport.

1) it didnt ruin rec. rec ruined rec and if anything rec is better now because of travel ball. sure the competition sucks but atleast the kids that are there get playing time and play positions they other wise would never get to play

2) rec ball can blame the daddy ball BS, the failure to want to allow practice more than a week or two before the season, only 12 games etc

3) the parents suck in rec ball. coached it for 8 years. they treat you like a baby sitter. sorry but some 12 year old that throws 70+ doesnt want to be on a team with a kid that has never played any sport before and cant even catch

and no upperclassmen are not getting burned out and quiting. baseball at the yuoth level and HS level is more popular now than anytime in the last decade. go look at the numbers. not the number right after covid but the 2023-24 participation numbers

and those that quit say its not fun because they cant get on the field in HS. it isnt fun when you dont work as hard as other kids and get passed up after mommy and daddy have been telling you that you are so great.

yea saturday was a complete joke. we had kids playing position they have never even played in practice. was comical in some ways and cost us a couple spots for bracket. worked out ok. that tourney will get us bumped though for start of next year 100%

Travel ball is the Ivy Leagues for parents and kids who aren’t smart enough to ever attend an Ivy League school. Its the best way for them to network with like minded folk.

I don't think that travel ball is all bad. A lot of good teams and coaches exist and make it a great experience for the players. Growing up I loved travel ball and being around friends.

With that being said I umpired 5 travel ball tournaments when I was in college and saw the ugly side of it. The funny thing is that the young age groups the worse the experience was. 7u coach pitch is without question the worst of all. A lot of parents think little Jimmy will be the starting shortstop at LSU when in reality they just want to go home.

Travel ball is a major target for a lot of the OT baws and for good reason. I will be the first to say I don't think it is all bad though.

Soccer is no different, especially girls soccer. There are teams that cost $2,400 or more and I know of people who drive from Hattiesburg Ms to BR 3-4 times a week for practice

umm some kids like baseball more than other sports

has nothing to do with social status

i can tell kids that are into baseball....they dream about winning a state title and going to play college ball just like those that dream of "Friday night lights" dream of winning a ship.

the ot baws dont like travel ball because 99% didnt have the makings of a varsity athlete like uncle june would say

most are fat fricks who care way more about drinking at the hunting camp every weekend than spending time with their kids

travel ball can be great but it can be terrible too. if you are an over zealous dad who pushes their kid into when he doesnt really want to play...well thats fricking stupid

treat your kid like shite because he didnt play well...you are a shitty person

try and force them to do the things you like...shitty parent

but if you kid truely loves baseball, then it can be great thing. its not for every kid just like travel soccer isnt, aau basketball isnt or any sport. some kids just want to hang out with their friends, play a few games and chill...i have a kid like that, and its ok

key is to get the kid to find something they like and are passionate about and get them to pursue it to the degree they enjoy. my oldest was really into robotics so he joined the club...well their practice made travel baseball seem mild...he quickly found out he liked building and driving robots by himself not with others and he didnt want to spend hours each day doing that and parts of his weekend...and thats ok

same kid would give up any day of the week and pretty much anything to be on the football field or throwing in track.

he would skip anything but football to do quiz bowl

my other two love baseball and each likes 1 other sport a lot

point is, it doesnt have to be sports but they need to be involved in something that they are passionate about

hopefully for the true BAWS of the OT their kids are passionate about sitting on the porch at the fishing camp drinking root beer and wetting a line every once in a while.

You're the sucker for taking part in it.

Grow a set, just say no, spend the weekend with your family teaching them life skills (camping, fishing, hunting, growing things, building things, exercising) instead of a bunch of nutty travel ball people. Remember that your kids are being exposed to this nonsense and soaking it up like a sponge. You are making it normal for them.

And don't let travel ball get in the way of keeping holy the Sabbath.

is it that they are burned out? or is it that they dont like how much work it takes to stay on the field and to keep from getting passed up or is its they like other sports better or is it they want to fish or is it they would rather chase tail?

99% of the time when someone tells me they are burned out...its almost always someone that has fallen behind and they almost always tell me that while holding hands with a little blonde in a short skirt.
