The stoplight certainly has not made traffic worse. I think helped a bit, as others have said. Bigger issues are the bridge openings and the lack of a dedicated left-turn lane signal for Hwy 21 southbound traffic. Much more frustrated with traffic on I-12 between 21 and 190.

My biggest beef is the lack of vision for the growth in school populations. STPSB has been in catch-up mode for more than 10 years. MES felt it initially right when my kids first started there in 2005. My oldest went straight from MES to MJH before Lancaster opened, which was sorely needed but which has been playing catch-up ever since. MJH is overcrowded, and MHS is exploding (>2000 kids this year). Pontchartrain and Tchefuncte too.

Still, there are NO definite plans for any more schools in western STP. CRAZY. Madisonville needs a high school. I've heard the school board is looking at shifting districts eastward to even out enrollment at Lakeshore, Fontainebleau, and Mandeville. That makes some sense at least.

Beyond that, the area probably needs another junior high and elementary. Lancaster at least has room to grow.

Given the existential issues south of the lake, I don't see the growth trend leveling anytime soon.

I can't imagine ever moving back.

Back when Jefferson Parish was blowing up in population a similar thing, but on a larger scale, was happening. In the mid-70s, the east bank of Jefferson Parish had only two high schools. Riverdale for girls and East Jefferson for boys. In the year before Bonnabel (the new boy's high school) opened, EJ had over 5,000 students. It was the largest all boys high school in the country.

RACE TRAC GAS STATION UPDATE: The Tuesday night meeting was very well attended and the Race Trac attorney presented arguments for the variances. The sale is pending decision on variances. What it comes down to: Race Trac does not agree with Mandeville's regulations and wants them waived. Multiple requests: lighting, 3 ft fill, impervious concrete covering, height of canopy, LED lighting, electronic sign, required buffer, etc. Race Trac can probably scale down their requests on most EXCEPT: removal of 30+trees, including several Live Oaks large enough to qualify for Live Oak Society. Mandeville usually takes a hard line on tree removal-so there is hope. The property has the proper zoning for a gas station, so it all comes down to whether or not the variances will be granted. Sign the petition, write your councilman and email:
lspranley@cityofmandeville.com asking that the Committee stick to the Mandeville requirements and NOT grant the variances. Vote to be taken on 8/22.

Who are "they"?

There are no current public plans for any new schools in Madisonville.

These Louisiana small town politicians are Grow At Any Costs. They do not think about anything except sales taxes and property taxes. Who cares if it becomes an eyesore or if it causes flooding. They will let someone else worry about that.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but this mentality is exactly how BR developed the many eyesore, ghettos around town. Growth at all costs. It starts out with the good ol boy system, but eventually they are forced out because the denizens of NBR move in and vote them out. But this is the hope I think, for them, so that developers will always have a continued need to build new. Pigs at a trough...Look at what is happening now around Burbank and Lee...Area will be worse than Gardere and Tigerland put together in 20 years of less...Overbuilding or poor planning is the ammunition that kills off the character of great towns and cities.

Prairieville and Gonzales are also two prime examples of areas that are basically dead now as a community because of poor planning. It's like gentrification in reverse. Most people think Dutchtown is so fantastic, but it is a travesty for folks who witnessed the last 30+ years of haphazard development in the area. Bluff road is a racetrack, where 20 years ago you might see 5 cars go by in a weekend.

Of course some of the traffic and connectivity issues come from he NIMBY crowd as well so they bear some of the blame, but it always comes back to leadership that only cares about $.

Damn you're right. I used to run around those places too in the early-mid 90s but spaced on the Shooters location. So that would be where the Dollar General store is? Hard for me to place for some reason. Maybe because was so long ago or was drunk.

One of the reasons we just listed the house for sale. Moving from hwy 1077 and brewster area to north of covington. Traffic and overdevelopment has gotten out of hand.

The light has saved me 20 minutes a day on average compared to the 4 way stop.
