Not to worry - I emptied my ice maker drawer last week into the creek, which should cool the ocean enough to stop it from happening. Must have been 2 pounds of ice cubes. I didn't call Al Gore before doing it, so (in all fairness) he didn't know.

If the ice is on a continent and then enters the ocean, it would cause the ocean to rise. So if your glass was full of water, and put ice in it, it would spill over. I hope you don't think Antarctica is a floating ice cube, but rather a continent that is covered in a massive amount of ice.

When did people's politics or feelings become more important than science? I'm sure you would dismiss the anti-vaxers, flat earthers, BLM, etc. as someone's feelings and politics trumping overwhelming evidence to a contrary conclusion. Why do this with overwhelming global warming evidence? This isn't and shouldn't be a political issue.

Honest question, based on “science” do you honestly think there is a chance in hell the ice in Antarctica is about to melt and slide into the ocean?

I ask, because the average temperature there ranges from -76F in the interior to 14F along the coasts. That being the case, please show me the SCIENCE that makes you think it’s possible for the ice there to somehow start to melt to the point huge chunks start falling off into the ocean. Please tell us all how this is possible. Has the freezing point of water changed and we just haven’t been told?

Well, the originators of global warming are the ones who lumped all of it together. The people attacking it are doing the same.

There are some shoddy studies that you have to sift through when reading about this stuff, no doubt. Some of the assumptions made are ridiculous.

Ultimately, thinking we're to blame for good/bad on a global scale is a very human thing to do. Our hubris as a species is impressive.

I like the story of al gore's mentor making a 180 on him last minute on all he had worked on, but gore was so sold, and far in, he couldnt go back. SOB doubled down to make himself VP, and richer.

Except instead a "God" it was the Annunaki as they left Earth to return to their planet Nibiru.

I blame all of this on the new crop of weathermen we have these days. We used to have good weather and then we got this sorry latest whippersnapper generation of weather folks who have ruined everything.

In looking at the map showing the areas of the earth affected by global warming I’d be more worried about wine production than I would about a giant sheet of ice melting in Antarctica.

If it happens, it won't be instantaneous, at least not on a scale we can appreciate.

You're completely misunderstanding the dynamics of the particular ice sheet in question. The air temperature in Antarctica has little to do with a "collapse."

The collapse of glacial ice sheets happens from the bottom up. Warmer ocean waters penetrate the ice sheets and the bedrock, which starts to thin the ice sheet.

If an ice sheet is no longer heavy enough to displace enough seawater to support its weight, the sheet will start to rise, ultimately breaking off from the main sheet, floating away, and melting.

West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS) could melt and cause a massive global flood.

I could win the lottery.

According to the government space agency, melting ice in Greenland and Antarctica has increased the global sea level more than a millimeter per year, which is a third of the overall increase.
I went down to Grand Isle last year and the year before. I noticed the water was 1 mm higher on the shore from one year to the next..

I'm building an ark as we speak.

The last study I saw said the ocean level was up 1 ft. at Galveston.

Somebody needs to get all these computer models to agree.

I thought y’all just said this ice sheet is on dry land.

Warmer ocean waters
Where they gonna get this water that is drastically warmer enough to melt a glacier?

Does computer models bear this out?

Aren't glaciers built from the top? What is going to keep it from rebuilding from the top?

You realize glaciers are affected by gravity, no? They "flow" to the sea.

You realize they normally break off. You realize they are normally replenished from the top.

The Alfred-Wegener Institute suggests that the West Antarctic ice sheet is not terribly stable and cited a 2016 study that suggested it could disappear in as little as 1,000 years.

it's a metric ton of if's and speculation.

If the sheet moves, then they say we get 8 feet of ocean rise per century. That's 61/64ths of an inch per year.

Fwiw This is a fox story.

Yes, I know, but for the last 150 years or so, they're not being replenished as fast as they're retreating.

Again, we can argue the human impacts in another thread, but this shite is all factual. Why people feel the need to be so obtuse is beyond me.
