The people who sign up do all the work. IT's genius.

This is going to turn into another OT thing where everybody is descended from royalty

In a sense it's a very good bet that you are. Think of how much your family tree grows exponentially with each generation you go back. It's completely reasonable that someone somewhere in your family tree was descendent of royalty even if they didn't even sniff a throne themselves.

If you go back far enough just about everybody is related.

There are tons of free sites. Are the pay sites worth it?

I was thinking about using it but my grandfathers family changed their name when they moved here from Germany so I'm not sure how much luck I would have

Never understand the people who are obsessed with this stuff. My grandma is fanatical about family history. She has our family book that she's traced back to God knows where.

It's kinda cool I guess, but I could never imagine doing all the hours and hours of research to complete it.

I have an uncle who traced my family back to France from the 1640's. They were allegedly from the Alps region of France. What a bunch of retards for leaving that nice area for Louisiana.

If you want to use ancestry.com for free you can access it at your local library.

How does that work? Do they give you their login?

You have to physically go to the library and log on through one of their computers. You need to have a library card and get the staff to sign you onto the computer. You can't do it from home through the library website. But that would be sweet.

My dad's brother did this a couple of years ago and showed it to me. All off of Ancestry.com. It said I'm related to Charlemagne. I really believe that.

This is true. My family has been Mormon since before the move to Utah, and after almost two hundred years of hardcore genealogy, the amount of research is ridiculous. My grandma has this huge paper family tree that she did that's like 10'x20'. It goes back before the Viking period to people with single names like Ug and Ork.

Given that you're from Alabama and your family tree is mostly a straight line from all the inbreeding, it makes it a little easier to trace.

I am not sure why anybody cares past 3 or 4 generations anyway.

"Yippee, I am kin to someone interesting 6 generations ago!"

Yeah, and that is 1/64th of your DNA.

Go back 10 or 15 generations and everybody is kin to damn near everybody else anyway.

works going into the future too In 6 generations you will have contributed 1/64th of your descendants' DNA

A single person is as significant genetically as a rock tossed in a river.
