That radar image on flightaware is what the current conditions were during the flight. Look at all those storms by New Orleans. Certainly factored in the decision of where to go.

A guy on a flight i was on had a seizure and it was a nightmare. Basically could do nothing but watch him. The pilot asked me if should make an emergency landing and i said yes. By the time we landed the seizure had stopped and the guy didnt want to get in ambulance. Most of the other passengers were pissed as it was about a 2 hour delay. I was embarrassed but at the time it was the right call. American airlines gave me an extra 25k miles!1

I don't know about Mobile, but Gulfport can handle most, if not all, type aircraft.

They both have runways longer than Baton Rouge. A 737 doesn’t need much runway. They fly them out of Key West and that runway is only 5,000 feet long.

Looking at the path, they must have just crossed BTR towards MIA when the decision was made to turn around and land.

Can GPT or MOB not handle a plane that size? Seems that would have been faster than making that big loop around.

Gotta kill a lot of altitude. They’re making a big loop no matter where they land.

If the dude was really a cardiologist, then he's a major a-hole.

Apparently it's not a completely uncommon occurrence. Some doctors fear the liability and a few just don't want to be bothered.

My BIL implied that the woman in distress would probably have died without his assistance, and he's not a guy who would bullshite or exaggerate about this type of thing. He was in the right place at the right time, I guess.
