I’ve been a virtual teacher for a week and a half. I knew there would be a drop off of student engagement, but damn. I’ve got 80 something students and less than five are doing stuff.

I’ve got parents who’ve asked me to stop sending reminds out so early in the morning (8 am).

I’m convinced more than ever that if it weren’t for our regimented, compulsory educational system, our kids and future adults would be morons, because there’s not a lot of voluntary learning going on.

Hell, even with it people seem to be getting dumber.

What time does class normally start for the day? 8am seems pretty acceptable to me

No we don't. School is nothing more than mass brainwashing and social conditioning that turns out low IQ after low IQ.

I’m assuming this is a public school. One with a lot of diversity.

No, there is plenty going on. You just seem to have the misfortune to be teaching to a demographic that doesn't really care.

Well I'm a parent of one of the five. Lucky enough to have a dedicated daughter who understands the importance of an education. If it were me at that age I'm sure I'd be having trouble finding the motivation.

We're struggling at our house, but we're managing to get our 3rd grader to do most of his assignments every day. Just tons of distractions in a modern household. He just finished his piano practice with his mom. We've transitioned to online lessons. We've always struggled at reading and we are trying to have him read and reading to him every day.

I know he's not getting the same level of instruction as he would at school, but it's better than nothing. I truly worry about what NEXT year will look like with most of our students missing 1/3 of the school year.

Y’all are incorrect in your assumptions about the racial demographics. It’s pretty even.

My 11 year old gets up and the first thing he does (without being told) is to do all of his assignments for the day. Around lunch he asks me to check them to make sure they are right.

I agree with you but it's probably got more to do with the parents than the kids.

Get your arse back to raising/educating our youth instead of posting on tigerdroppings.

keep working at it. Most parents aren’t even getting their kids up by noon. They’re enjoying the peace and quiet. Hence the request to stop sending reminds.

I said nothing about race. There are plenty of people of all races who find educating their children an annoyance.

ETA: Except Asians. Asian parents be scary.

People here like to blame teachers and schools for our sorry education system, in truth it's the parents and it always has been.
