quote:Sometimes it’s just a stupid decision made by a scheduler that has no idea what they’re doing. Take this instance for example.
Yea they tried to screw us in Key West. Overbooked the flight by 19 seats and started plucking people to take the next flight out, which was in 2 days. When I say there were some pissed off people, I mean they were furious. Like security getting involved
Couple summers ago, we’re flying a round trip from IAH to Key West and back to IAH. We had flown into IAH from Charleston, SC earlier so we already had about 2.3 hours of flight time for the day already and we are limited to 9 hours of flight per day. Key West round trip is about 6 hours. So we taxi out to the runway, and before we can be cleared for takeoff, the controllers shut down the airport because there was a huge line of thunderstorms just south of the field headed north. So we park in the run up area and fire up the APU and shut down the engines and wait. And wait, and wait. When we leave the gate, our “flight time” starts, so after over an hour of waiting, I tell the captain that we’re not going to be able to return from Key West because we’ll be over 9 hours. He disagrees. I literally have to write down our times (3.5 hours already) and add the flight times to Key West and back. We’d be at over 9.5 hours when we arrived back at IAH. That’s not legal. So he finally agrees and calls crew scheduling and explains this to them. There’s a couple of captains and first officers sitting ready reserve in the crew room for this exact situation. We would have to taxi back to the gate and the new crew would come on board and complete the trip. No problem. But the stupid scheduler couldn’t get it. They said we’d be fine and to continue the trip. Idiots.
So we take off and about 3/4 of the way to Key West, we receive an ACARS message that we legally can’t make the trip back to IAH. Well no shite, we fricking told you that. So we get to Key West at about 5 pm and they had to cancel the flight back to Houston. We fortunately didn’t have to face the passengers since we went out the arrivals side of the airport but I can’t imagine the amount of pissed off people. It was late afternoon and they had already checked out of their hotel rooms, and had to find another place to stay for the night. And hotels in Key West probably average well over $300 a night, if you can find one available.
All of this because an idiot scheduler can’t do simple math.

Delta is the only way!

All the major airlines suck. The industry may be irreparably broken.

Explain to me pushing back and having to wait 2.5 hours for W&B to be entered into a computer.

All of the commercial airlines in America are dogshit. I only fly the Middle Eastern airlines like Qatar and Emirates. Extremely high-quality, extremely hot flight attendants, and the luxury amenities that come with business class tickets.

How often do you fly? I rarely have issues with AA and I fly them 100+ flights a year.
Summer travel is always tough with weather and crew issues. Sounds like you got unlucky.

Dude I was so fricking irate. Mostly because it was that compounded with a 16 hour delay beforehand. I called my company and said if they booked me on AA again to not expect me to be the for work.
No offense
No offense

this is typically the case, someone that doesn't fly that often, in a different environment. increased anxiety level, makes minor inconveniences seem traumatic, some airline buffoonery occurs from time to time but it's not as bad as a lot on here make it to be, another thing that factors in is that most passengers don't really understand what's going on operational/logistics wise and they have an over simplified view of "how to fix things," at least how to fix things to accomodate themselves

Flight from Dhahran Saudi on dec 22 was booked at about 36 hours and three flights. Got to Houston on time and when checking in at regional transfer desk was told I had gotten to the counter too late and my seat was given away. Apparently the computer data base rolled over every 24 hours and bumped me somewhere over the Atlantic. I maintained that I had my bags already on the regional jet. ?Nothing we can do she said.
Well mam, call your supervisor, and security because I am going to have a melt down that will be very public.
Supervisor came to desk and informed that a seat had opened up and I was ready to board. Home for Christmas Eve

Had two consecutive trips with American result in a flight cancelation earlier this year. frick them.

I normally fly Delta when I travel (usually about 5-7 times a year) and usually have a good experience. A few weeks ago we flew to Cancun for a Caterpillar conference at one of those “all inclusive” resorts and had to fly American. Flew from Bham, Dallas, to Cancun. Really had no issues. I still prefer Delta. But can’t really complain about American. The only thing I didn’t like is they didn’t have a video screen in the seat back on any of the flights.

Coming home. I was already in a bad mood before the flight because I had asked for Delta because I’m Diamond with those guys so would prefer to just keep adding to that.

Spot on. My wife flew one time without me in the last three years and as luck would have it, her flight got diverted and she has written off Southwest forever. I told her it happens, and it is the nature of travel. I think something like 2% of flights for all of 2023 were cancelled out of 10 million.
Posted on 5/31/23 at 9:33 am to dobiegil
Yep and won't fly them since I booked almost 1 year ahead for a trip and when I got to BR airport American had me on standby.

you should join AA's rewards programs and double dip, get one of those AA credit cards that they push on the flights, last time I looked they start off with 60k? miles, especially if your company has you expensing things
Posted on 5/31/23 at 9:40 am to 777Tiger
AA actually has the best card. Free bags for everybody in your party up to 4 people. Board before the steerage. I have been free upgraded a couple times. And yeah I think i got 60000 points which worked out to 3 roundtrip flights
