Amazon Sales Tax Question

Everyone knows that starting today Amazon is charging sales tax. Question is how much should the sales tax be? I went to see and it's like 11% they are charging. Shouldn't it just be the 5% that is the actual sales tax? Is the state going to be paying all the local governments their % or will they just keep it?

The tax isn't showing up for me when I go to check out.

Showed up for some items and not others. Maybe depends on where the merchant you are buying from is located?

Not sure.. I just bought something and no tax was applied.

from what I've figured, if it is sold by Amazon, tax will be added. If it is sold by a 3rd party (you can tell in the description) no tax is typically added.

I wonder if amazon will be turning over your purchase records to the state which will allow the state to flag you if you dont report the purchases that were 3rd party?

I usually buy from independent sellers anyway since it's cheaper.

This is an interesting development. Just to see I added a $1k Samsung TV to my cart and no tax was added. I guess because it's sold by Samsung and not Amazon.
So I guess one still must self report taxes for such items.

The only thing it really affects that I buy is dog food. Everything else is cheaper independent.

We've been paying tax for Amazon for a while in Pennsylvania. You shouldn't have to do anything yourselves- Amazon has taken care of it
