Do the MARS thing and I’ll hit you up for a phone patch sometime.

Got my Extra Class ticket in '93. Haven't been on the air in 5-6 years.. Have several large moving boxes full of radios and assorted gear......

I used to be, but although I keep my Extra Class license up to date, I haven't been on the air in about 10 years.

I’m wondering what are the choices/content like on this frequency? Do people have worthwhile content/news/programming to broadcast or is it just a bunch of bullshitters?

I have one of the portable Baofeng (or however you spell it) and just made a J pole to hook to it. Works pretty well.

What are you wanting to do?
Check out this video about Ham basics and how to get started:
Ham Radio Crash Course
That channel has been very helpful for me.

There's still a lot of this, but in my area it's a bunch of 30-45 year olds shootin' the shite talking about all manner of things. Some competition. Definitely a younger demographic here than what seems to be the norm across the country. That could be a result of how rural it is.

I'd argue it's making a comeback. Cell phones are so easy to operate and will never replicate the feeling of pushing that mic in hopes someone will hear you. And that's just from my experience messing around with other people's equipment. I don't have my own yet. I have so much to learn it's insane, but I'm enjoying the challenge

I’ve been off the air for roughly 2 years - moved from a place where I had plenty of room to string antennas, to a subdivision.
Same problem here - I've purchased a short vertical which will fit in my attic. I had fantastic success many years ago with a vertical in the attic. The wife may have some problems with my plans for running the cable from the attic into my office.

Do you need to ground your antenna if it's installed in the attic?
I assume if you use your gutters, then it would not be necessary.

im so lost reading through this thread but i still read every post and im fascinated
When I walk into his basement it's like I stepped into 1960 sound/radio room. It amazes me that all that antient equipment still works and he uses it daily. He travels all over to HAM conventions and trade shows. Covid has clipped his normal travel plans, but he's in Vegas this week with some of his long time HAM buds.

At one apartment I had a hula-hoop type antenna in the attic and did not need a ground. It was hard as hell to tune, and any slight frequency change required re-tuning. I'll see if I need to figure some way to ground this abbreviated vertical. I got it several months ago, and have not yet unpacked it.

Three weeks for the first exam for the Technician. Took the General four weeks later.
The testing was offered once a month in Hammond, Louisiana.
I had the Extra Class study guide, but I had trouble getting interested. Probably due to my ignorance about the information. It was too technical for me. It needs to be technical. The question pool was about to change. Three years ago? I wanted to to get it over with. I signed up for HamTestOnline which helped a lot. I took the exam at the Jefferson Parish Library.
When I took the General and passed, I was asked if I wanted to take the Extra Class exam. I knew about five of the answers out of 50 questions. That’s a pathetic result even for guessing.
