I didn’t follow it closely, but I was always under the impression that the Italian boy(friend?) did it, and she was just a young American girl that got railroaded by the fricked up italian justice system (remember, they convicted a couple of Italian geologists because they failed to predict an earthquake).

They caught the guy who did it, Rudy Guede, fairly quickly, and the evidence against him was absolutely overwhelming. He admitted to being there and kissing the victim, but claimed he went to use the bathroom when someone suddenly broke in, stabbed her, and yelled "there's a black guy" before running out.
And then he fled the country.

Guede’s attorney was a smart mother fricker. Got him a quick trial and a lesser sentence for fricking murder just so he would turn states evidence against two innocent people.

Didn't the two innocent people lie about calling the cops, throw their cell phones out that day, and lie about a watching a movie on his computer during the murder which was proven false by computer forensics? Not to mention the cartwheels and making out as the dead roommate is being carried out the house.
