I know people who moved to large cities for work not knowing anyone and did Match or eHarmony and found legit dates pretty frequently.
I don't think the "specialty" sites are legit at all and I don't think any sites work for smaller cities without thousands of singles that moved there for work.
The friend I am thinking about has cleaned up on Match.com in Dallas apparently.

Match and Tinder are 100% picture driven. It's like shooting fish in a barrel if you're an attractive WASP over 6 feet tall who can package 5-6 great photos of you dressed in a suit, sitting sideline at an NFL game with your boys, out on the town wearing a swaggy outfit and taking shots, one of you snoozing on your leather couch with your dog, an open copy of a Malcolm Gladwell book resting strategically next to you ("OMG I love "Outliers". And you like jazz? Are you really from New Orleans?"). So easy.

I doubt there were many women on that site but I don't think the list proves that
From what I remember reading in one of these threads, women could message men for free.
The lists were only paying customers so it would have been useless to count the women on those lists as the only women members.

This. I moved to NYC and did eharmony. Mostly because I was lazy, but also because all my friends were married. Enjoyed the circuit for a while, but finally picked one and settled down. My wife and I have been together for almost five years and married for two. No regrets.
