I can't repeat what June 19 was called when I was growing up.

How intellectually inert do you have to be to hear the word "Juneteenth" and not get curious as to what that might mean?

Of course it is. This the same state that observes Robert E. Lee Day on the same day as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and gives REL Day first billing on the official state calendar.

I thought it was just a Texas deal and didn't realize a bunch of other states now celebrate it. growing up in Texas I heard about it and I think I was taught about it in school.

I honestly thought it was just the name of a Little Rock hip hop festival until a couple years ago. The only place I ever heard about it was the local hip hop radio station and I never even heard them say what it was actually about.

I've known about it forever but then I grew up in Galveston County. Apparently it not just a Texas holiday anymore.

Didn't you people take American History in school???

Posted on 6/19/20 at 1:30 pm to OleWarSkuleAlum
I knew about it because I'm familiar with the Galveston area. But it was definitely an obscure holiday up until a couple weeks ago.

I heard about it when I was 18 and my boss told me a story about how he figured out what it was

I knew what it was
Why do you people care?
I’m white but is it wrong for black people in this country to celebrate the emancipation of slaves?
The ending of slavery no matter where it is is a good thing.
We can’t look back in history like the left and try to erase it. We should acknowledge it and not view it through the lens of the present.
I know this is a very pro-white centric board but I mean come on.

I've never heard about it until an hour ago. Considering it's 2020, not surprised it's all of a sudden a big deal now. What is it?
Posted on 6/19/20 at 4:03 pm to A Menace to Sobriety
Same here. Thinks it’s celebrating slavery
Posted on 6/19/20 at 4:37 pm to OleWarSkuleAlum
Probably. I’ve heard of it for over 40 years.
Posted on 6/19/20 at 6:17 pm to OleWarSkuleAlum
I didn't know why Juneteenth
Posted on 6/19/20 at 6:51 pm to thelawnwranglers
I grew up in Colorado and I can say it was never in my AP American History class.
