I only heard about it about a week ago. Evidently its a big deal so I am little ashamed I knew nothing of it. Actually, I am lying. I could care less about Juneteenth and BLM.

Learned about this date just last year.

Learned about the emancipation proclamation in high school, and it only applied to slaves in the confederacy. Union slaves were not freed. Also, Lincoln gave the confederacy the opportunity to “keep your slaves” If they stopped fighting.

CSA said frick You.

Imagine what today would look like had the confederacy said, you know what, since this war is all about slavery, I’ll stop fighting today, and keep my slaves.

IMO this is one proof the civil war wasn’t about keeping plantation workers.

if you're an adult man that's never heard of juneteenth, you're either woefully unintelligent or the public school system failed you

when I was a kid in houston in the 90's, my black classmates talked about it every year. concerts, cookouts, etc were always taking place that weekend.

I was aware of it, and had heard about celebrations in Texas, but that's all I knew...

Yes, I remember it since I was a child. Never knew the meaning behind it though. If you lived in the south (or just Texas?) for any long period of time and weren’t aware of it, you’re probably just not a very observant person.

ETA: reading this thread, I guess it is a bigger thing in Texas, which would explain why I knew of it As a kid.

I never heard of it until this year

If this was supposed to have some meaning, a better name would be more appropriate

What’s funny is the people in this thread who remember when they first heard of Juneteenth.

Or you just didn't grow up in the Houston or Galveston area.

I learned about it in 2000 or 2001 when I worked with a black guy who took the day off and told me why. He celebrated by staying home, smoking weed all day, and playing Madden on his PS2.

this would be like someone posting:

quote:

Am I the only one who's never heard of, "the battle of little bighorn" until this year?"
