I agree. You will never see a Rita 10 year recovery which effected far more people than katrina.

???

Rita was awful, Katrina was catastrophic. The people who went through Rita need more attention and deserved more help than they were given, and maybe more people were "inconvenienced" in Rita, but certainly more people suffered great destruction in Katrina, and it's not close.

I have this hope that the media will focus more on the recovery and today, and less on the tragedy, but I'm not confident in that.

not going to happen

we're going to hear soundbites of kanye saying,"george bush hates black people", than people who have actual positive stories to tell

It took me 16 hours to get from Houston to Hammond during Rita. Let's not forget all the people that died evacuating for Rita.

we need a rita thread

By the time Rita was coming in - we had left the city - other units from other states were the primary forces in the city in September and October - (although we would return to New Orleans in October or November).

Someone modified the Rita track for the morning briefing to show it was coming straight at us (in Baton Rouge/Carville), instead of parallel to the coast as it was headed for the Louisiana/Texas border.

LTC Ducote said, "bullshite! Somebody changed that map." - and we all had a good laugh.

Good times...

frick. Do we really have to go through this shite again on this board? I'll give you the condensed version. When something like this is barreling down on large indigent population a large death toll is expected. That's a population that can't just grab the checkbook and credit cards and load up the Suburban and go find a hotel up North.
