I don't think many people realize how prolific Black Bears once were in Louisiana. There were so many that there was a subspecies called the Louisiana Black Bear, which is the state mammal.

If you've ever played golf at Atchafalaya Idlewild you would see multiple gators and black bears in the fairway or even on the greens

And more and more people are calling for a thinning of the bear population. Anyone whose ever had to clean up after the bears visit has had enough of the "save the bears, they were here first" bullshite. Eventually a bear is going to attack and harm a human being, as we saw in Florida a few months ago.
Like gators and nutria, you can have a controlled population of them allowing for a healthy ecosystem. The belief that we have to have them living amongst us unchecked as neighbors is simply foolish.

Well now we have a Black Bear Season in Louisiana.

quote:

The 2025 Louisiana black bear hunting season runs from December 6 to December 21 and is a limited, lottery-based hunt managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF). The season is a result of successful conservation efforts that have led to a recovery of the state's black bear population.

quote:

The season will last for 16 days, beginning on the first Saturday in December and ending on the third Sunday in December.

Permit lottery: In 2025, 26 permits will be issued through a lottery system—an increase from the 11 permits offered during the inaugural 2024 hunt.

Applications for the 2025 lottery opened on July 28, 2025, with a non-refundable $50 fee.

Mandatory training: All successful lottery applicants are required to attend an LDWF bear hunter training course before the season begins.
Harvest rules:
It is illegal to harvest cubs (bears weighing 75 pounds or less) or females with cubs.
Hunters must be Louisiana residents with proper licenses and a valid bear hunting permit.
Hunting areas and permits for 2025
The 2025 season will expand hunting to three Bear Management Areas. The 25 lottery permits are distributed as follows:

Area 1 (south-central): 8 permits (5 landowner, 3 general). This includes Acadia, Iberia, St. Mary, and other surrounding parishes.

Area 2 (Pointe Coupee/West Feliciana): 3 permits (2 landowner, 1 general). This includes portions of West Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes.

Area 4 (northeast): 14 permits (10 landowner, 3 general, 1 WMA). This area covers parishes including Tensas, Madison, and East Carroll.

LWLF still treats them like the endangered species they were in the 70’s and 80’s.

same goes for sharks. Need to cull.

Not the same story. Sharks are not extremely over populated like gators. And they are still getting destroyed by commercial fishing and them damn asians that think their fins are magic.

i wonder if he got in the water and then was attacked, or if maybe he went up to a sunbathing gator

Well it was middle of the night and he had apparently removed his diaper to swim in the water. Could have drowned then attacked or attacked.

MIL lived across the street from a family with an autistic child. The boy only slept an hour or two per day and his favorite toy was a mini tramp. Leave early 4:00 am to go fishing and that kid would be bouncing on his trampoline.
They had keyed dead bolts on all of the doors to make sure he didn’t go out at night. Poor kid died at 17 for no apparent reason.

What are the effects though? Unfounded fear? How many bear attacks have there been in Louisiana ever? The answer is zero(0).

They're not even really trying anymore are they?

I've seen the results alligator attacks, It doesn't look anything like what they are trying to make this sound like.

The only disclaimer I’ll give is that deep in the east can get less city like than you’d expect

They were trying to be kind to the family and general public with description of death

“Horrifically savaged and eaten by two alligators” is a bit harsh and really doesnt change the information they are trying to get out.

Have a little decency

Again that is stupid.

Just say the child was killed by an alligator and leave it at that. There's no freaken way to soften the "Killed by and Alligator" part.

Blunt force trauma by and alligator make you seem like your running a mickey mouse PR team. But we are talking about NOPD. Not the beat and brightest.

It has nothing to do with decency. It has to do with being straight professional and to the point. Not saying something that creates doubt and speculation.

How many would there be if our great grandfathers hadn't laid waste to them 100years ago?

Tell me the benefits that having them around in great numbers vs not having them around in great numbers?
And please for god sake, restrain yourself to parrot animal planet logic and say they have as much rights to be here and raise families as humans.

It’s about a kid that wondered off into a gators’ habitat and was attacked

Its neither the child’s fault nor is the gators fault and God forbid the parents aren’t blamed for this horrible tragedy

You do realize those lagoons are pretty much adjacent to a Federal Wildlife preserve right?

I don't know if you've even driven on I-10 in New Orleans East, but it's usually littered with dead alligators.

Yet if gators were extinct the child would still be here. People say gators fill a critical need in the ecosystem, yet I'm old enough to remember when there were not gators and don't recall any environmental catastrophes. Any role gators fill will be filled with other scavengers who are not apex predators and pose no threats to humans. Hunt them to extinction. We almost did one time. We should complete it this time.
