Awful story.
Feel terrible for this family.

Now on to gators.
LWLF still treats them like the endangered species they were in the 70’s and 80’s.
I believe gator farms are still required to return a certain % back to the wild. These are 3-4’ gators whose only predator is bigger gators. Add to that less and less gators are being harvested bc the price for wild gators is low low.
And we have less suitable habitat now than when they were recovering.
You have a huge population that is definitely over carrying capacity and is spilling over into developed urban areas.
I just assume every body of water has a gator in it now.
The population is in need of a good culling.

same goes for sharks. Need to cull.

But yes, this is an awful story with an awful ending!

Makes you wonder what these agencies actually do with their resources when a volunteer's drone finds this kid.

How is this not mandatory in the city? There is ABSOLUTELY ZERO reasons for that kind of predator living in a city...NONE

My God, that police response is SOOOOOOOO New Orleans.

Just wonderful

Long and short of it was my 12 yo son was swimming in the river behind my house and I saw about a 9 footer making a bee line for him. I am basically a river rat and although gators are common, I've never felt uncomfortable being in the water around them either swimming or fishing my whole life. I remember being astonished at how fast the gator was moving. Never seen one swim that fast. Started yelling for my son to swim to me and I ran to get between him and the gator. Luckily was able to do that as the water was shallow. Was screaming and waving my arms like a lunatic, but it wasn't until I got directly in his path that the gator saw me. He was locked on my son like a missile until then and by that time I wasn't 10 yards from the gator. Gator still wouldn't leave despite throwing rocks at it. It finally backed off enough for us to make a dash for the shore. We made the bank and the adrenaline either hit or wore off. Was shaking so bad I couldn't stand up. Called local Wildlife trapper and he came down, said he couldn't catch the gator and told us Gators are apex predators and if we were in or near the water we were on the gators diet. Ever since that day I kill every one I see and could care less what anyone thinks about it.

Have you seen how many are in City Park or Bayou St John? They are all over the fricking place.

So are hogs, coyotes and black bears are all over the Atchafalaya Delta and starting to move in to residential neighborhoods

Gators don’t like human flesh. They will drown their prey but then in the case of humans abandon them once they realize what it is.

This is beyond false. Gators primarily feed on rotting corpses, not fresh ones. Any larger animal it can't swallow whole it will stash then come back to it once it starts to decay to the point it can be easily dismembered and swallowed in bite size chuncks. It's why gator hunters use rotting, smelly meat to bait their hooks and not fresh meat. Jeez. Everyone that knows the least bit about gators knows this.

I haven't seen any report of them killing the alligator. Why?

Yep and it changed my life forever. No more taking the kids to the river swimming or wade fishing and up till then we lived in the river during the warm months. I've tried and I just can't do it for worrying about a gator. All fishing is done from a boat and we don't swim there anymore.

How many people get attacked in City Park? Has to be a lot if there is a need for their extermination.

I like seeing the gators at City Park. Gators aren't very high on the list of dangerous threats in New Orleans.

I don't think that what happened to the kid had much to do with overpopulation. He wandered into their habitat unfortunately. The gator did what it was evolved for millions of years to do.

Damn is the kid little, alligator attacks are rare, I have dealt with one and it was a 8 year old chasing a dog. He was retarded and not much bigger than the dog, and I think the gator missed the dog and then the boy. It didn’t show up as gator attack but drowning but that’s bullshite, he was found dead in gators den chewed up

I'm not one to get offended by words, but it seems that the thought of him drowning and then being eaten by gators (much more likely than being attacked by one, btw) never crossed your retarded mind

Every year the Zurich Classic is nationally televised...it never fails......they show every gator seen on the golf course.......

If you've ever played golf at Atchafalaya Idlewild you would see multiple gators and black bears in the fairway or even on the greens
