I saw a Fiat today with Gucci branded on the side. It was honestly quite depressing to see brand mania taken that far.

I wear my AE's pretty much 5 days a week (I really need some other shoes, but just like these so much). Had them 3 years now. They are definitely broken in. But I still get people making comments. Asking where they are from, or "man you have some really nice shoes". They hold up, and can be recrafted for like 125 bucks. Had mine done once after neglecting to wax them a bit and had a stich pull loose. To repair the stich would have been free I believe. But while they were out, I just had them recrafted.

Yes. Just bought some walnut strands last night.

Also got some brown park avenues.

Had some Cole haans that felt nice but only lasted 2 years. I'm upgrading as my old cheap stuff break down.

If you are worried about price, look into getting used from ebay. I did that with my PA for $60. They were hardly worn. Excellent shape. I bought the strands new though.

AE are very nice and have a lot of value. Their recraft service is top notch. You basically get a better than new shoe for $150.

My friend bought a pair that never really broke in properly. The next time he bought something from AE, the salesperson asked about how his previous purchase. He casually comments that one pair didn't break in properly and he doesn't wear them anymore. After a few more questions the salesperson said something along the lines of "that shouldn't happen" then credited the account the full $300 purchase price.

There are better quality shoes, and better looking shoes, than AEs. However, AEs are good-year welted, traditional, and they have excellent customer service. AE is effectively the lowest tier of "high-end," traditional men's shoes.

My rough scale looks something like:

AE
Carlos Santos (great option in the ~$300 price range, from Skoaktiebolaget)
Alden
Carmina
Enzo Bonafe
Vass
JM Weston
Edward Green
Lobb
Gaziano & Girling
St. Crispin's

Then bespoke. AEs are an excellent gateway drug.

Picked up some new oxfords and loafers recently. Anxious to try something outside of J&M

They are on sale and yes, they are worth the cash.

PS: I'm wearing a pair of AE in a lounge at Heathrow right now and I fear no man.

Life is too short for cheap shoes.
