You purchase an airline ticket, you get access to the overhead bin.
That self centered mentality is kinda the problem.
But from the objective side: that’s not true. Some tickets explicitly do not allow access to the overhead and you aren’t entitled to space if there is no more room.
First come, first served, which pisses me off when I see people carry 3+ bags to carry on, all of which they probably also think they are entitled to place in the overheads because they deserve more stretching room.

I hate people that have seats in the back five rows who put their stuff in the bins near the front.
On my flight back from LA yesterday, the woman sitting in the center seat next to me was the last person on the plane. There was no overhead space where we were sitting (row 9) but guess what? There was plenty in the back. So when we landed, she had to wait for everybody else to deplane before she could go to the back to retrieve her carryon. Last one on; last one off.

I hate overhead bins. Too much aggravation. The only things I carry on are wallet, phone and jacket, even on transatlantic flights. If my bag gets lost, so what? Buy some stuff there and file a claim.

It's perfectly OK for people to use the overhead for the largest bag that will fit. But people who put only their laptop up there because they don't want to step on it during the flight should be flogged. Get with the program.
