when us old people talk about social media, I think everyone knows what we are talking about. It's the thing you pucker your lips up for, you take a pic of you eating at a place you can't afford, you take a pic of a car and say it's yours.....

Pretty much. Social media is openly using your real name and posting pictures. This is no different than old school forums before the idea of social media was dreamed up. No, it's not anonymous 100%, but it's nothing close to social media unless you make it that way.

Social media was coined in the 90s. Usenet which was started in 1980, is considered one of the first social media platforms. Yes the term didn’t become more widely used until the internet became extremely popular and things like MySpace and later Facebook came about, but it’s been around for a while.
