probably because they are the ones that have to care for sick kids, take them to the Dr., etc, etc. and since they care for the sick ones, guess who gets sick?
Besides, sick days are there for a fricking reason. If you're sick, I'd rather you stay your arse home so as not to get me sick.

They obviously didn't think you were smart enough
Some people just really like to do it themselves, ya know? They don't want to pass the work on. The Controller would get up in arms over my boss wanting to send me to events, even. She wanted me in the office at my desk at all times--even if it meant holding me back from learning new things.
I don't think it was intentional--just an old school company that equated work to being present in the office. Hell, even the girl in sales was in the office 85% of the time.
Vastly contrasted with my new job where my boss loves to send me to networking events and lunches where I can come back and share what I learned.

I think I am pretty low risk of catching menstrual cramps from The Skirts around here. Now get your water-retaining asses to work.

I work in broadcasting and we have openings for part time news specialists all the time. It's not glamorous work but it is an incredible way to get your foot in the door and the employers even encourage upward mobility. So, in essence, we should be getting flooded with resumes from aspiring journalists wanting to break into the business, right?
Nope. We're stuck hiring high school teeny boppers because college students aren't interested.
And the recent college graduates we did hire are lazy, show up late every day, and do the bare minimum. It amazes me how they choose to casually throw away the opportunity in this terrible job market.
College graduates, unfortunately, have to learn the hard way that you have to show initiative and work your arse off to make it. I did, and it took several years, but it paid off.

Well no shite but that is why it is safer to hire a man than a woman if you have to pay them the same amount.

Yeah companies that are set in their ways suck which is why startups are the most fun.

It takes a bit to get to know me, but I'm really a helluva nice guy. And I am at work every day.

And also most women move where their husbands find work.

20 years ago I worked in a call center right after college, while going to grad school in the daytime. I did just fine paying $700 rent with a girlfriend who had a similar income.
We had very little student debt though. *that* is what sucks for today's college grads.

This is actually somewhat of an issue in the medical field and affects doctor availability.
Med school has reached a near 50/50 male to female ratio and many of the females begin retiring or working very limited hours once kids come into the picture.
No way to address that issue though. It is just the way it is.

I don't think anyone is going to argue with this

A buddy of mine was an art major and he took a Christmas seasonal job with the post office. 20 yrs later he is a supervisor in charge of about 200 employees and does pretty well for himself.

A huge part of the problem is that universities have raised tuition to that make a healthy roi almost impossible. We have allowed universities to grossly exaggerate their value in the workplace and it's only getting worse.

What is a "stupid degree"? I've said this before, but you don't go to college to get a job. That is what trade schools are for. You go to college to become educated. Being educated makes it more likely for you to become employed.
If you go to a company and talk to a manager and ask them what they studied in college, chances are they won't say "Managerial studies, of course." He/she will probably say Literature, History, or some variety of science.
Now, there are ridiculous degrees out there. I'm not saying there aren't. I'm just saying our outlook on colleges and universities needs to change.
Let's just say whatever Sabi says, I agree with.
Except I still want to know:

God, I would love some of these college grads to come work for me.
I've sent out requests to McNeese's students graduating with degrees in teaching, business, art, etc. and offering 35-40k to. I want intelligent (semi-intelligent) people to come learn my trade. Not once have I ever gotten a bite.
To a point made earlier in the thread- the kids coming out of our local tech school have spent two years on an almost worthless degree (my trade). They could have come to me straight out of high school and gotten paid a decent wage for on the job training and I would have paid for their certifications. If they do make it all the way through the tech school program, they come out thinking they should be making 100k a year because that's what the trade school told them they could make.
My industry has no one coming up in it. Everyone is old or getting there quick and replacements or new blood can't be found. I've even considered going the Latino route but I can't find them either.
(I wasn't replying to you scruffy, just the thread in general)

EXACTLY! In my experience women miss WAY more work on average than men, especially once they have kids. If I am running a business I don't want to have to wonder if my employee is going to be there or not.
Women are flat out fricked by this mentality. The reality is that the situation with women in the workplace is both a male and female issue.
Men feel they have to be at work, even if they have generous paternity leave policies, because taking more than a week at most is considered bad form by the other guys in the office. And if a guy decides to split the work at home with his wife and leaves every other day by 5 or 5:30 to pick up his kid from day care, he's a bad worker. On the other hand, if the mom doesn't do that, she's a bad mom and, oh by the way, she's being paid as if she is expected to do that, so frick, may as well.
The entire mentality on women in the workplace has to shift away from the absolutely outmoded way of thinking you have posited. European countries have been able to figure this shite out already. Parental leave and familial time is encouraged in Europe while it is flat fricking punished in the U.S.
If we want equal wages for women, and we should because that makes it easier on the dual-income families out there (which is a lot), then we need to reevaluate the manner in which our social mores dictate how women are viewed in the workplace (even subconsciously) and how that affects the amount of money women make.
