It's amazing to me that people don't realize those are just another microphone into your house for data collections

There was a big story earlier this year about Amazon not wanting to release the audio that one of those recorded during a murder. A big reason was due to them not wanting people to realize the devices are constantly listening and recording

he allegedly asked: “Did you call the sheriffs?”

The question was inadvertently picked up by the smart speaker and the voice-powered virtual assistant recognized the phrase as a command — prompting it to call 911,

I thought you had to start off every command with "Alexa". It doesn't just do everything anybody in the house says.

Don't put that in the bedroom because 911 will come rushing over when Im with my wife and she is screaming during sex
Screaming what? "Is it in yet?!?!"

I don't think Alexa will call the cops, but Jeff Bezos will know that you have a small weenie.

I actually get leery of that alexa listening to my private conversations.

Now, think about the cellphone you walk around with all day long every day.

Think about it. Now, find a large rock and get to smashin'.

It only records a couple of seconds before the wake word is spoken and you can views everything it has recorded.

According to CNET, while investigating, police noticed the Echo in the kitchen and pointed out that the music playing in the home could have been voice activated through the device. While the Echo records only after hearing the wake word, police are hoping that ambient noise or background chatter could have accidentally triggered the device, leading to some more clues.

Everything alexa (and every other voice command device) listens to, everything it can hear it sends it all back to central servers. If you research what companies do with this data it will make you really paranoid.

I don't really disagree. I more worried about the PC thought police tbh. They might have an issue

Do you ever discuss leaving your house while you are at home? Do you talk about when you are going on vacation? Do you talk about money? Do you discuss where your kids will be and who they will be with?

You are blindly trusting thousands of people who have access to very private information to not be tempted to sell your information to crooks.

So it starts recording right before it is told to record, because it knows it's about to be told to record? Because it's psychic?

Yeah, like your phone, it's always "on."

It listens but does not record until the wake word is spoken. Monitor the data traffic from the device.

...and yet I'll bet her cell phone, tablet, and/or laptop is on nearby.
