Diabetes, cancer, ALS, etc. are diseases and not something anyone chooses to have happen to them. And before anyone jumps my crap, I know things people do things that can bring on these diseases such as smoking, eating too much fried foods, sugars, sodas, etc. but that doesn't explain how small kids get fatal diseases like cancer, leukemia, brain tumors etc.
Here's the thing though: these tend to mostly affect old people. Addiction tends to affect the young. Your family feels just as powerless to stop an addict from going to the grave as your parent dying of cancer. You can't sleep for fear of getting THAT call. Once addiction gets to a certain point and they haven't been sober for years, then you're always thinking that death or chaos is not far away.

This is very true. It really doesn't matter. What matters is what are you willing to do about it.

I can understand your point. If they're using the label as a disease as a Crutch or something to hide behind, they truly don't want to be sober and clean up their side of the street. I'm just letting you know I don't get hung up on the concept of the label as a disease. It doesn't matter to me because I know I'm fricked up
but if you had cancer we would care

It matters when you have employees trying to take off work for the disease of drinking a fifth of whiskey everyday. Alcoholism is protected under bs laws

Going to need a source on that one. That would never work in a thousand years.

You're welcome. You remind me a lot of myself, back when I was an idiot.

Addiction is a disease

This again. If you only knew the people who actually wanted help and have to fight with their insurance companies tooth and nail to get any benefit at all.

So you're arguing the doctors are responsible? I mean, that's what you're saying.
Certainly they have some responsibility yes.
And some are now taking ownership of that responsibility. You might not think they have any ownership in it but they certainly do.

"You can’t fire an employee for requesting leave to treat for alcoholism.
This recent federal court opinion reminds us that this request for leave is a request for an ADA accommodation. (Whether it’s reasonable will depend on the specific facts and circumstances). Regardless, a request for an accommodation is a protected activity. Thus, if you were to fire an employee for making that request, that would be unlawful retaliation under the ADA."
You really didn't know you couldn't fire addicts lol?

Drinking is not a disease.
Addiction is a disease.

I'm not debating that. I was just twisting his logic around on him. MDs and especially pharmaceutical companies have played a huge role in the current epidemic.

Why the frick their health insurance have to pay for them mistreating themselves. Does your car insurance pay for your radio if you punch it 50 times?
