Claude is a great guy. Most all the Strothers I know are good people.
They still have that “Old Black Belt” Southern drawl. Takes me back to my youth when all the old folks around here spoke that way.

He’s got some top notch hunting land and lots of it.
He reminds me of the dad from “‘Big Fish”

I had a mountain lion shadowing us on a opposite ridge in Colorado for a day and a half
We were more frustrated he was going to scare of any elk
He never got close or came across but it was an erie feeling knowing he was lurking
When we crossed in a creek bed we saw his prints.
He was a big boy.

I've always read/heard that if you see them you're probably okay because they aren't stalking you. In most of the attack stories people never see or hear them until they've sprung their attack.

I need to get back up that way. It has been years since I've been there.

I hike in the Rockies all the time, and I have been for a dozen years. In all of those hikes I’ve never seen a lion.

Maybe its a difference of location and being away from trials when I am hunting. I also am quiet and often sitting over a meadow or trail junction for a long time, giving the animal time to slip in.

When I elk hunt is see mtn lions way too often. Had one on a limb above me for about 1/2 a day before I realized he was there.

I do t like big cats.
I’ve seen two in 4 trips to Colorado elk hunting. Last one was at night. Sonofabitch was waiting right off the side of the trail waiting for me to pass by. Thankfully I saw his eyes glowing in my headlamp before I passed him up.

Yeah, the odds of seeing one while hiking are probably much lower than seeing one while hunting.

Hikers make a lot more noise and much more motion than hunters. Cougars will see or hear them first the majority of the time and avoid them.

First time I saw one, I was stalk hunting. Walk very slowly and quietly for 20-30 yards, stop, look and listen for a couple of minutes, and repeat. I was at the top of a hill that went down into a large draw full of hardwood trees. I sat down to rest because I had been walking for a while. I lit a cigarette and was relaxing and looking down into the draw trying to decide if I wanted to walk down there, knowing that I would have to hike back up it after dark. I saw some movement through some trees down below at about 100 yards and a cougar walked out from left to right. I got a good look at it between the trees a couple of times. It never saw me, just kept walking across the draw and out of sight.

Needless to say, that made up my mind as to whether or not to go down there.
