KOZHIKODE, India (Reuters) - At least 17 people were killed and more than 100 injured when an Air India Express passenger plane repatriating Indians stranded by the COVID-19 pandemic overshot the runway in heavy rain near the southern city of Kozhikode on Friday, officials said.

The Boeing-737 flight from Dubai to Calicut International Airport was carrying 190 passengers and crew, the civil aviation ministry said in a statement. Among them were 10 infants.

Television footage showed rescue workers moving around the wreckage in pouring rain. The aircraft lay split into at least two chunks after the plane's fuselage sheared apart as it fell into a valley 35 feet below, authorities said.

The office of the chief minister of Kerala state, where the airport is located and which is home to a large number of Indians working in the Middle East, said that in addition to the 17 dead, 173 others had been hospitalised.

the most important aspect of airline safety is the quality of the air traffic controllers

Yeah after seeing the pictures, I imagine that the death toll might rise a little bit. Sad

Hilltop runway exposed sudden wind changes. Visibility was within parameters. Light rain. Sounds like they landed long, may have hydroplaned. It's interesting that the aircraft broke into 3 pieces. Lots of energy. No fire.

Retired Wing Commander IAF. Been there since 2004. So I heard.

If it was the return leg, P2 was flying. Indian carriers are notorious for having young relatively inexperienced copilots.

Anyway you slice it, a one class B738 with 191 on board is heavy, and can be a handful in shite weather.

I wonder if they ever considered going around. I guess we will find out.

Heard the Vapp was 176kts at the threshold. Rwy is configured 10/28. An approach was initially made to Rwy28 and aborted, reconfigured for Rwy10. Monsoon, and an exposed hilltop runway not far from the coast. They may have experienced an unexpected overspeed, but the aircraft should've been able to recover and go around, unless they were fuel exhausted.

That's insane that a steep embankment is that close to the end of the runway.

That would line up with the lack of a fire

Landing in a heavy storm like that a headwind could switch into a tailwind quickly, and looks like it already happened as they switched runway directions.

If they were coming in with a tailwind they would most likely be too fast. Couple that with slamming on the brakes with a wet runway and you have the factors present to hydroplane.

Last ADSB report was 224 mph at 2300 feet on final. No doubt they were too fast and couldn’t stop in time.

Yikes. Way too fast.

I wonder what factored into the decision to not go around or divert.

Possibly fuel emergency. Lack of fire lends some hint of that.

Someone referenced 176kts at threshold. That’s ridiculously high even for a no flap landing. A normal Vref is around 130-145 kts.
I’m no 737 captain but a 30 knot tailwind is madness.
