York managed to escape the room to get help and was brought to a hospital in Playa del Carmen, the outlet reported. She’s now recovering at a hospital in Cancun after undergoing facial reconstructive procedures.
“She had nine hours of plastic surgery,” her brother Mathew York told CBC. “She has nerve damage in her face. The swelling is kind of going down now, but at the time it was quite bad.”

Yeah, another good one is the story going around of the guy who ended up in the ICU in Mexico and they won’t let him leave until he coughs up 5 figures for his stay.

Being in a foreign country is inherently more dangerous than being in your native land. Doesn’t matter if it’s Mexico or France. You’re naturally unaware of your surroundings and probably don’t speak the language. Don’t know the customs. Don’t know which areas are safe or unsafe. Criminals will target foreigners solely for these reasons. If you think you are as safe in Mexico as you are in your hometown then you are naive
