The large portion of every single online interaction you have is touched by AI. Gemini or Copilot. Claude or ChatGPT.

Ultimately, the companies aren't using watermarks to steal your IP they are using them to trace synthetic media data back to their systems for liability and moderation purposes to increase training levels of their machine learning models.

Nothing to do with tracking.
The internet is full of AI trash. I can tell the difference but a lot of people can’t. It isn’t their fault. They don’t spend a ridiculous amount of time on the internet. Honestly, for many people, if it weren’t for smartphones and tablets they would never use the internet (if only). Those people are here, though. And there needs to be some sort of way for them to realize that 85% of shite you see online is fake.
At the very least there can be proof. If people still don’t believe something is AI someone can verify.
This also gives a boost to people actually putting in work.
If you’re worried, make your own thing. It’s not that difficult. Generate your own shite. Write your own code. Not saying don’t use AI as a jumping off point. But once it gives you an idea, YOU go do it.
The issue is that a lot of fricks out there are talentless and can’t. They’re idea less. They aren’t meticulous. They’d rather have garbage output at twice the rate than double check their output to ensure it’s accurate.

I won't 100% disagree with you, but I think it depends on application...
Aren't these watermarks basically invisible unless you are using specific software to look for them? So, yeah, it's fine if you are using AI to remove whatever from the photo. Nobody cares about that. It should carry the watermark, but so what?
However, AI videos being passed off as real news, AI generated legal documents, predatory scams, etc. etc. Yes, it would be really nice to be able to detect that.

its dumb. you write something then ask for a grammar and spell check and it gets tagged as AI written. kinda stupid.
