After months of stalling Abbott, Feds finally use Defense Production Act for Baby Formula

Not the Bee
President Biden invoked the Defense Production Act on Wednesday to immediately alleviate the shortage in baby formula caused by his administration's shut down of a major factory 3 months ago due to FDA concerns about food safety.
The announcement comes as the supply of infant formula across the country has decreased 40% since April, leaving parents of newborns frantic to find food to feed their babies.

Invoking the Defense Production Act means that suppliers will have to fill all orders related to baby formula first, no matter in what order they were received. The FDA has also cleared the opening of the Abbott factory that had been shut down, though the speed with which these measures will see formula return to shelves is dubious.
The Biden administration continues to face criticism for its response to yet another crisis of its own making, waiting months to address a concern that they were aware of as early as February.

Will take some time for ingredient makers to re-priortize and ship I would imagine.

About 3 months too late.
Would have been easier to just not shut down Abbott after they found no evidence of product issues.

7-8 weeks roughly. It's going to be a bad summer for parents of infants that depend on formula.

THis is Abbott's chance to shine.

It's the least Biden can do after his minions at the FDA caused this whole fricking problem.

Government getting more involved….
Yeah that will help.
Yeah that will help.

Guys, now republicans can get away with screaming for months that Biden didn’t do anything at all to solve the formula shortage. When the left says “he invoked the defense production act”, we get to completely ignore it, not get called out for it, and people will believe it because the media will report the same thing… right? RIGHT? After all, that’s what happened after Trump invoked the act to make sure hospitals had enough ventilators for Covid very early on in that crisis. Just making sure we get to play by the same rules here.

There's no issue with baby formula production. Also, it's a good thing that Abbott was shut down.

This is like shooting someone with buckshot and then cheering yourself for giving them a bandaid

Government efficiency that we’ve sadly come to expect. To be honest, I’m surprised it only took them 3 months.
What kills me though, considering we have example after example of how the government absolutely sucks arse at matters not related to national defense, is there are millions of Americans who want more and more government control over every aspect of our lives.

No, that was (D)ifferent.

"Fine! If we can't abort them we'll just starve them to death..."

Of course it was.
Not to mention that demand for baby formula has remained fairly predictable and steady over the years. The supply disruption in this case was CAUSED by the federal government.
Whereas demand for PPE in spring 2020 skyrocketed and grew well beyond what any reasonable production forecast could predict.

I'm kinda diggin one federal agency dick-slapping another.
But I don't have babies so I can watch from the stands.

Probably shipping all of it to the border for the people who snuck in illegally. Because they would hate to send those future voters back to where they came from.

Well, it is why they waited so long. Had they done something about it back in March/April, the problem would have been resolved before it hit the shelves and media. Therefore, no one would know that the Dems saved us once again.

Anxiously awaiting The View's episode on how great Biden handled this crisis and white supremacists caused the whole issue.
