You are fortunate the open enrollment period for insurance is now open.
Here is the current Millennial strategy:
Take a look at healthsherpa.com. Pick a low deductible plan, let it get in force, get knee taken care of then quit paying the premium.

I've lost 25 lbs so far and my knee feels better than it has in years. (Subtle brag) but serious if you are over weight, lose some.

Having had 2 meniscus clean outs last year, it sounds like what I had. Even the almost giving out. I had no ligament damage.
I have health insurance but it's a high ded plan. MRI at a free standing facility with my insurance "allowed charges" was like right at $500. Surgery ended up being covered 80% as we'd met our ded by then BUT the charges were like $10 for MD, surgery center, anesthesia.
Many places will do cash discounts. Or it IS open enrollment period. Gotta start somewhere. I'm in Lafayette so can't recommend anyone in BR.
And depending on where the meniscus tear is it may or may not heal on its own. If it's in an area that there is good blood flow it may but if it's in an area where there is no blood flow like mine were, there's no option other than be in pain OR have it cleaned out.
I was at work in 3-4 days (had it done on a Friday and went to work Wednesday mainly as I have a super flexible schedule and wanted the extra day. Son had the smae thing and had it done on Friday, went to school Tuesday (Monday was Labor Day) but he could have gone on Monday. Just no driving if it's the right knee.

I usually pay cash for everything. Of course I've only had to see a doctor once in 9 years. People with good immune systems do not need to see doctors for every little ailment.
I do not believe in the theory of insurance.
I do have auto insurance. Homeowners insurance one day.
No need for personal attacks. Me not having insurance should not bother anybody in this thread. Unless you are a democrat who wants everybody to have insurance to indirectly fund Obamacare for the poors.

Sorry it wasn't personal attack, with no insurance that's what they are doing to ask, and payment will be required up front.
Hopefully you don't need surgery because that can get really expensive and you won't have the option of paying the negotiated price the insurance companies pay.
I know this because I've recently had hand surgery, and had I not had insurance it would have cost $6,800. before any post opt therapy. It was a fairly simple surgery, in and out in less than 15 minutes. I can't imagine what a serious surgery would cost, or god forbid critical illness or accident.
I think most people have a disdain for people who don't carry insurance because more than likely one day they will have a serious health emergency, and you will get medical care and when you can not afford all your medical bills the Hospitals will eventually do what is called a write off and that's great for the patient, but for the next ones in line not so much because they (we) have to pay for it in the form of higher medical cost.

I've heard straight from Dr that the negotiated Insurance price is still more than a cash-paying patient pays.
This was for MRI/X-Ray/Outpatient surgery/Cast/followups.

Sounds about right. I think you can use credit card for portion up front. Care Credit(credit card for medical stuff) with a regular credit card might cover it all.

I didn't go to Doctors either when I was 27 except for getting my knee scoped.

Yeah I didn't go to doctors either when I was young. Except when I broke my ankle at 17. And my other ankle at 21. And blew my knee out at 25. But yeah why would any young person who isn't sick ever need a doctor.

How did you get the jaw surgery and marrow transplant? Were you covered on your parent's policy at the time? I don't understand why you needed surgery if your immune system blocks you from medical care.

Just read this part....you may be looking at nerve issues as well as hip area imbalance. Basically, once on part of your lower body is weak, it tries to adjust and after years of this, your joints dont operate properly due to mucles tighness/issues.
Good luck, this won't just be a scope. you have that to worry about on top of alignment issues and possible nerve issues. That means surgery, therapy, chiroprator, etc are ALL in play. And that's not counting the possible neurologist needed.

Amputation is basically your only option at this point. Prosthetic legs are very pricey though, sucks you don't have insurance.
