I have a relative (by marriage) that is extremely trashy and has married two men that are illiterate. Not one but two.
My wife is just perplexed by this and once wondered if she puts out newspaper ads for guys that can't read. I, of course, pointed out that they wouldn't be able to read the ad.

I didn't think there were that many out there at that age who could not read or write, but since I've started the line of work I am in, I've seen more than I thought I would. Education is important - so many people I deal with who only finished the 7th or 8th grades. You can't do anything worthwhile with that. Sometimes I think teachers pass these kids on without them learning anything just because the kid is difficult and the teacher wants them the hell out of their classroom.

Many years ago, I worked with a black dude in his mid 40's that couldn't read. We worked for a construction company, I was a heavy machine operator, he was a laborer and he always caught a ride with me to work. Whenever we broke for lunch, he'd pick up a newspaper and sit down with it, pretending he knew how to read in front of the other guys. I never said a word to anyone that he couldn't read.
