I just don't think it likely someone is going to attempt to burgalize a house they perceive to have a security system when so many homes do not. Plus the home is in a low crime area with no history of break ins.

Very true and a dog is even more effective. It doesn’t even have to be a vicious dog, just a loud one that barks a lot.

Locks only keep out honest people. If you have something they want, the security cameras aren't going to stop them.

Unless you are lucky enough to get a license plate or something to identify the people breaking into your house, a video of some random person is pretty useless to the police.

This is exactly what happened.

Vivint does it too.

Put a few signs up in corner lots and other visible/high traffic areas.

Send out the team to knock on doors for the next 2 weeks.

We have license plate readers and video all over the neighborhood. You might get into a house but it better be a stolen car. Guy down the street had his front door kicked in and cleaned out. Two hours later the cops pulled into an ex employees house and arrested the guy. Knew the boss was leaving for Europe.

I’ve had adt and other security companies knock on my door at every house I’ve owned. They try to get permission to put up signage in a few yards then wait a few days/weeks and go door to door selling systems. It gives the illusion that your neighbors are doing it so why not you.

Every adt guy that came by presented a company badge. If you have concerns you can call the company. They are nation wide so I doubt anyone will be able to confirm if they are soliciting in your neighborhood.

Better be a neighborhood with little traffic, cops told us they don't have enough resources to dedicate to running a 1000 or more license plates just for a break-in.

I have two horns placed directly inside the attic vents on both sides of my house. You can hear my alarm go off from 1/2 mile away. That gives someone 30 seconds to get in and out before everyone around starts looking at my house. Definitely worth it IMHO.

In the past 4 years, I have only had two alarms where I wanted the cops to come out. They turned out to be false. Wasn't ever charged money.

ADT calls me and asks if I want the cops to come before they send them. The only time they'd automatically send them would be if I hit the panic button

That's interesting.

Did you know that the infamous "Bind-Torture-Kill" serial bi-sexual rapist and murderer worked for ADT? Yeah. He'd go around selling ADT systems and installing them.

Then, after he met a nice young family with a daughter, he'd wait until they were asleep, disable the ADT system, then bind, torture, rape and kill the whole family.

Understood, but more often than not when I see a sign/stickers on someone's house I wonder if it's true or not, since people commonly do what you are referencing.

Every measure you take is a LAYER of security. Locks on doors, cameras, alarms, lighting, etc. Sure you can have everything and still have a break in, but each level reduces that chance. Plus I get a discount on my home owners insurance for the alarm, so it'd be asinine to NOT have it.

Tell him or her you are not unicef you pay to play.

I had a guy after the 2016 wanting me to put a sign in my yard for free.
I told him $120 a month cash upfront and I will make sure his sign is clean, presentable, and up everyday.

How the alarm works at our place of business:

Alarm is triggered.

Operations center waits about five minutes for you to call them and tell you them you tripped it accidentally.

If no call, they notify the local 911. That takes a couple of minutes.

It takes a couple of minutes to dispatch a patrol car.

It takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes for the police to get there.

We have had several alarms, and the earliest response we've ever gotten has been 20 minutes after the initial alarm report. This is a business in a built up area nearly in sight of a police substation.

Could be casing. Guy was probably waiting for you to say, "No thanks, I'm with company X"

You are getting the shaft. My buddy used to trip my house alarm every couple of months, and ADT would call me before he could.

For every time I've actually wanted them to send someone out, they stay on the phone with me while they call the cops. Cops ask questions, and they act as the middle man. From them calling me to them calling the cops takes like 30 seconds max

I was watching some show about addicts and the junkie thief was saying that he avoided small yappy dogs more than big dogs when casing a place.

Also, they didn’t offer you anything but the signs? I had a company try to give me a free doorbell cam for letting them put up the sign.
