I’ve never heard of a parochial school giving preference to kids from the parish the school is in or denying kids from outside of the parish.

I went to high school in New Orleans and we had kids from as far as Venice and Burns that traveled over an hour and a half each way everyday just to go to school.

Sort of. It's twofold.

The first being demographic shifts. So you see schools like SLKF close, yet SGS, Aloysius, and Mercy are growing.

The other is simply a numbers thing. In the 60's when my parents were in Catholic elementary schools the average Catholic family size was around 5.4 kids.

When I went to Catholic elementary school in the 90's it was just below 4 kids.

I'd guess today you're close to 2.5 or less. Fewer Catholics having fewer kids...

My wife and I are doing this with our two boys. The only difference is, St. Cecilia in Broussard is hard as hell to get into for open enrollment. So we didn't get in there. Luckily we were able to get our kid into St Edward School in New Iberia, my wife works there, it's closer to our parents. Turns out, it's a great school and we couldn't be happier.

The only problem you will run in to is availability of a slot. Usually they take siblings first, then new students from the church parish, then everything after. Every catholic school in lafayette I looked at was that way. I imagine it's like that everywhere.

We didn't pay one for SES in New Iberia. However, we were required to register with Sacred Heart in Broussard if we wanted to apply. Funny thing is, all the stuff I did, all the people i knew never helped us get in. Nevermind I was a member of the KC's for that church and who take care of that school and raise funds like crazy for it. Nope couldn't get in, because I didn't camp out in the parking lot at 3am so I could wait at the door to hand my application in the microsecond the office faculty showed up to work. Knowing the priest my entire life didn't help either.

We used to be parishioners of the Catholic Church that was closest to where we live, here in Lafayette, but it did not have a school.

We paid an out-of-parish fee of $500 when we registered our kid for school at a different parish that's not really that far away. Ultimately, we became parishioners of that parish to avoid the fee, among other reasons.

ETA: damn Kracka, that sucks

It was back in 2014 when we tried to get our oldest into SCS. That was also before the oilfield took a giant shite on all the baws and bawettes in this area. Not sure about now, I would imagine a good bit of people were no longer able to afford the tuition. I know we lost a few families here and there in New Iberia to public because the parents couldn't afford 3-4 kids all at Catholic High. So they found good rural publics, and seem to like it there.

This can't be stressed enough.

h/t make sure you kids miss the Sex Education classes unless you want them to really get a hands-on experience.

That's the smart thing to do. Hell before we had kids we knew what school we were going to send to. So we just became parishoners of that church.

What sucks? All the shite that didn't work out? Man I don't care about it really. I didn't do any of that to get him into school there. It just all happen to be things that I believed would work in our favor. The fact that it didn't, actually worked to our advantage. Our oldest needed something different in terms of how his education is presented to him. A special type of faculty, and special people. St. Edwards in New Iberia has provided that, and gone beyond all of our expectations, and it's been awesome. It couldn't have worked out better had we planned it. Our second son will go there, and he will be familiar with the people, and we will just roll with that until the wheels fall off.

I know kids that live down the bayou that go to John Curtis

Kids from St Charles, St Benard and St John that go to Brother Martin, De Lasalle and Jesuit.

That's great to hear. All part of God's plan for you, and you have figured that out.

Some give as much as you or more, and become embittered by the admissions process.

Is Curtis really that much better than schools in Lafourche parish?

I went to Catholic school all my life and not once did I have a priest as a teacher.

This is 2018, brothers and nuns aren’t teaching kids anymore.

You can get written permission to switch parishes from your priest. All will be cleared up then
