This is Top Secret information, so don't share this information with anyone, not even Hillary Clinton:

The US Navy currently has an instrument that can detect and record minute variations in the Earth's gravitational field.

Russian submarines are prowling the Atlantic, testing our defenses, confronting our command of the seas, and preparing the complex underwater battlespace to give them an edge in any future conflict,” Foggo wrote.
“Not only have Russia’s actions and capabilities increased in alarming and confrontational ways, its national-security policy is aimed at challenging the United States and its NATO allies and partners.”

Why not Hillary Clinton gave them all of our Top Secret classified information so they clearly know what are our weak points are. Who wouldn't exploit them if you knew your enemies weaknesses.

I can't tell you how many cruise ships and container ships my boat "sunk" while we were out to sea...

Magnetic Anomaly Detection... it is a 30 year old tech but I'm sure the new P8 has cutting edge MAD equipment aboard

That's my point. While sure, it's alarming that the Russians are doing this...what the frick are they supposed to do to test their new technology?

This isn't something new, it's ongoing and not just Russia doing this.

Was on the Providence - Change in Opord back in 95.. redirected from a Med cruise to follow an Akula which had come down through the GI/UK gap.. 30 days under the ice... We were at modified section tracking party/battle stations torpedo the entire time - worked time-freq plot 12 on 12 off.. that, was tense.

I think you're getting me mixed up with RedRifle. He's a Russian/Putin fan. I'm the exact opposite.

I worded it wrong, you like to perpetuate it.

Putin is a cheeky bastard with an extreme case of narcissism. he knows his ultimate fate is probably death by his own people or doing. He is so concerned about his legacy of being a great powerful russian leader that it will be his downfall because of his cold war era attitude and political maneuvering. Russia is crumbling and he had a chance to be adaptive and receptive to western markets and ideas that would have propelled Russia into 10x a greater global position than it is right now. But it would have been at an expense to own personal wealth and pride.

Russia has a reputation for building great submarines but their maintenance and sonar systems have never been on the same level as the USN

Ours have historically been much quieter than theirs too.

He's also a dangerous leader of a country of 143 million with a completely rebuilt and modernized military that he's already shown a propensity to use.

He's also a leader that's openly expressed a desire to reclaim what the old Soviet Union lost in Eastern Europe after the Cold War.

And he's also not a fool.

He sees weak leadership in the US.

He sees an American military that's been cut back drastically and has for over a decade neglected to train for a large scale conventional war and instead focuses on small, low intensity counter insurgency warfare.

He sees an American public deeply divided and having little to no stomach for war.

He sees Western Europe virtually disarmed, having a NATO force that's little more than a pathetic shadow of what it once was.

The beauty about a diesel submarine is that it has the potential to be far quieter than a nuclear submarine

There's no doubt a diesel boat running on strictly battery (DC) power is queiter than a nuclear sub running on AC power. DC is quieter than AC because of no frequency or sound signature.

The problem with diesel boats is they are limited by battery capacity. The battery will eventually need to be charged and the sub has to come to the surface to run the diesel engines to do so. Once a sub comes to snorkel depth to run the diesel engines, it exposes itself with the snorkel mast sticking above the surface along with the noise and exhaust that comes with running the diesel engine.
