That is so fricking fascinating to me. Does anyone have a submarine documentary they could recommend? I know nothing about subs or naval warfare in general.

We have a pussy for a Commander and Russia wants to take out. They are already tougher than us.

I bet in the 80s and early 90s that took up a shitton of space, in a place where space is extremely limited.

Yes, as with any information, one must consider the agenda of the person providing the info. That does not make the information incorrect or misleading, though.

I'm not talking about Earth's MAGNETIC field. I'm talking about the Earth's GRAVITATIONAL field.

A magnet that sticks to your fridge is not using Gravity, it's using Magnetism. They are different. I know that you know that, I'm just saying that I'm talking about Gravity.

absolutely true...each submarine has a unique acoustic fingerprint and the USN keeps/disseminates those records Each 688 has a sonar room that is comparable to your average data center for a midsize company. Think 24 racks of servers each tasked with analyzing/cataloging specific frequencies. Essentially every USN fast attack submarine has their very own supercomputer built specifically for sonar When a new ship (foreign or US) goes out to sea we do our absolute best to get an acoustic profile. This can be done via sub tracking, SOSUS, or those little sonar ships the USN contracts out to float around the ocean listening in for submarines

When propeller screws from a vessel spin through the water, the "cavitation" of the operating screws create a unique sonic "signature" that can be recorded and used to identify that vessel at some future point.

Why has it been 16 years and Putin still hasn't challenged NATO? What's he waiting for?

Dude seriously, no worries. For every Russian sub slinking around, there is a vastly superior and silent American sub that is on their arse that they don't even know about that will create a catastrophic fatal hull breach if they step out of line... That is, of course, unless the piece of shite currently infecting the White House becomes aware of it...
