I mean I'm sure it varied a lot between 1882 and 1968. And I'm sure like the population of the country in general it was smaller than it is today. But still. 365 blacks have been murdered in Chicago so far this year. Compare to average number of blacks lynched annually in the entire country during the Jim Crow era: 38.
It gets pointed out a lot that if BLM actually cared about black lives they would focus on black on black crime, but when you see the numbers in black and white it's staggering the extent to which that is true.

Let me help out. Here's the direct link to the data source: Lynchings, by year and race per archives at Tuskegee Institute
- last year anyone was lynched: 3 total in 1964 (two whites and one black)
- total whites lynched across the same time period: 1,297
- last year with double-digit lynchings (blacks only or blacks plus whites): 1935

One is a racially motivated execution while one is wannabe gangsters popping each other. What a dumb comparison.
I'm not excusing the black on black crime, but comparing someone being executed for being black is different than drive bys to make yourself look hard.

Lynching is terrible. No argument from me here. But if like 60 times more blacks are killed by other blacks in present day, then isn't black on black crime 60 times more evil than lynching? I mean if we're strictly talking about black lives mattering, that's a whole lot more black lives.

Remember, we used to hang horse thieves in this country; there's a distinct possibility that a significant number of those hanged were hung for some other reason than a bunch of white boys got bored.

Yes, black-on-black crime is a bigger problem than racism in this country.
Yes, racism is mostly dead in 2017, confined to a few fringe groups with little to no support.
That having been said, this comparison is stupid. They're both homicides, but completely separated in motivation and reason. That means they are distinctly different problems for society to handle.

I'm saying the OP's point was to "put lynchings in perspective" and to conclude that gee, they really weren't that bad after all. And the reaction is a bunch of head nods. Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it.
