AC/thermostat terminology

The wife and I are having a debate and we turn to the ever so wise TD:OT to settle this. what is the correct terminology?
If one is going to make the house colder (numbers on thermostat lower) do you say "turning the AC up" or "turning the AC down".

Down.
Turning it “up” only makes sense if you’re talking about a window unit or a car AC where you can crank the fan separately.

Turn AC down for cooler temp.
Turn heater up for warmer temp.

Lower the setpoint to make it colder, raise the setpoint to make it warmer.

Turn up the AC = make the AC do more ACing aka make the room colder.

You set a temperature on a thermostat. You turn the temperature down.

On this matter, whatever your wife says is correct. This ain't an argument to focus on. Don't be an idiot.

This is some redneck shite

As someone pointed out, to make a room colder from a wall thermostat you are not turning anything up. There isn't variable fan speeds to crank up. You set the temperature lower (or down).
Case in point, in a vehicle turning the AC up is "more right" because you can actually crank the fan up.

Most home units without fan control though, you aren't doing more with the AC, you are just making it run longer. It's a time run increase.
Turn AC Temp down makes more sense, or even make the AC run longer than turn it up for decreasing temp.

Most other things in life, turn up the thing to make the thing do more of the thing.

Meh. I don't care much either way. I don't think I've ever said turn up or turn down the AC.

set the thermostat higher to make it warmer and set it lower to make it cooler. Unless you are talking about an AC that is not controlled by a thermostat. Turning the AC one way or the other is incorrect terminology if it is controlled by a thermostat.
