Baton Rouge mayor pitches big raises for police — paid for with money currently for libraries

quote:

East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards wants to ask voters to raise starting salaries for Baton Rouge Police Department officers — and to pay for it by cutting the budget for libraries.
quote:

Edwards said the library is collecting more money from taxpayers than it needs, creating a surplus. "Libraries in EBR Parish have accrued more than $114 million in budget surplus, resulting from years of overtaxation of citizens," he said.

BRPD will go from one of the lowest paid in the region to the highest in the state

This is great and will help police recruitment in the city.

The e-book selection the EBR library system offers for free is vastly more extensive than what's on Kindle Unlimited.

EBR has an amazing library system. Anytime I see someone trash it, I immediately know they have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Not dissimilar to the BR airport, actually

No shite.

I use the EBR Library (my daughter's card. Shhh) Libby app to read ebooks and download audio books all the time.
And the EBR Digital Archive is bad arse with millions of pictures and documents available to view/download.
Also Being able to search the Advocate and Picayune Archives going back to 1800s is very underrated and powerful. I use that at least twice a week.
Fwiw you can read any Advocate Article a day later (don't need to pay for online access. ).

Baton Rouge has a lot of shite to cut like Cats and Council on Aging but the EBR Liberry System and Brec Parks are pretty awesome.

I have 4 kids and appreciate the library services, however I believe there is a lot of non-essential things that could be cut. One summer day I went there with my kids. I counted 9 employees working with only 5 or 6 people in the library. I’m pretty sure librarians have a masters degree so we aren’t talking about minimum wage here. It is like that most of the time I go in, the employees outnumber the visitors.
Also to add this is a small ascension parish library im
Talking about.

Is there any data on the amount of usage of EBR’s digital offerings/library and their costs to run and maintain it (including any costs/fees for books not normally free or in the public domain)?

This is the debate Ed need to have in this parish. I am for libraries, but we don’t need a Cadillac. A nice sedan is just as good. We don’t need a library in every neighborhood. Regional libraries work fine.
