The guy who got shot wasn't a trooper. He was a Probation and Parole Agent. I was friends with the guy who shot him. It was a rough time for all involved obviously.

I lost track of him over the years and have no idea where he is these days.

They had safety checked their weapons (back then it was common to just use an empty duty weapon for training, there were no Red Guns or Simunitions) and done several cycles of practicing felony stops. It started raining so they took an early lunch. The Trooper went in his office to do some paperwork. At the time, it was policy that all personnel at the Academy carried a loaded weapon while in uniform since it was an open campus and there was concerns of someone just walking in and attacking Troopers. So he reloaded his weapon.

As he told me the story, he was in his office doing paperwork and one of the instructors stuck his head in the door and said that it had stopped raining for a minute and they wanted to hurry and finish the training cycle because it was probably going to rain the rest of the day.

He rushed outside, they were using the circle drive and portico cover right outside the offices, and ran across the parade square and immediately took on the role of the Trooper making the stop. Everyone failed to do a safety check due to being in a hurry and you can pick up what happened from there.

ETA: I did ask him one night when we were drunk in ZeeZee's what went through his mind when the gun went off. He told me it was total disbelief, he said he stood there for what seemed like a long time just looking at the pistol in his hand.

He was not a State Trooper, but rather a Probation and Parole trainee. The trooper conducting the training neglected to check his weapon after lunch before training resumed and shot Mr. Seymour point-blank in the chest; he, Seymour, was dead before he hit the ground.

Gotcha. I guess I thought he was LSP as they were at the LSP facility, correct? That first article had it wrong in the opening paragraph. Found this one. Was terrible tragedy for everyone for sure.

I know him well, too. Went to high school with him. Anybody that knows him will tell you the same thing...the guy is the very definition of a hero.

Being a good guy, he went thru a very difficult time dealing with this incident.

I was in the Marine Reserves with Lee when our unit(WPNS Co. 3/23) went overseas for Desert Storm...great guy and worked in the units armory. Have seen him over the years working details at LSU games. First met him when I was in HS sneaking into The Bengal in '87-'88 where he and Dean Shellhase(fellow Marine) worked as bartenders.

I was a cadet in that academy. Tpr lee was great dude just made one yuge mistake. Very tragic. I was very close to quitting the academy that week but went through with it.
