By exempting them you are essentially dropping a test grade (in this case a zero). If they decide to take the final test after exemption I would then drop the lowest test grade they received.
It shouldnt hurt their score when others essentially got a test dropped and they didn't.
Eta- I suggest putting this in your syllabus beforehand.

Then that's not fair to people with A- where they can only be helped.
Did you set a policy ahead of time where taking the final can only help someone who is exempt?
In the absence of a policy in place, I'd just give them the grade they end up with. They took a gamble and it didn't pay off, shite happens.
Next time, put a policy in place in the syllabus or whatever.

I had a teacher do this.
Turn in project for C.
Turn in project and case study for B.
Turn in project and case study and take final for an A.
But if you attempted the next grade, you got whatever grade you got for your quality of work.
2 of us took that final.

Why would you exempt anyone who doesn't have an A or A+?
imo since the grading scale has changed those with A- and below have a lot to gain or lose compared to the old grade scale when it comes to finals.

My thought process is the guy who is exempt earned that privilege.
So they enjoy and respect your class enough to go beyond what is required of them.. and would like to participate in an exam to maybe further their knowledge and education that they paid for.. shouldn't be penalized for it.

The policy is if you have an A, youre exempt from the final, and your grade before the final is what you get for the class.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there's no difference in GPA between an A and an A+ correct?
If so whoever still wants to take the test is probably not going to get a lower grade- although the existence of this thread may prove me wrong

i think it really depends on how it was worded in the syllabus, but i would say let him keep the A.

Did you ever mention what would happen in your class if you took an exempted final? If not, I wouldn't give the final any credit one way or the other, and just go on the rational that it was exempted and you never gave any sort of indication that it could help or hinder.
