Unlike many folks in LA, having a basement is clutch here. We'll sleep down there in the summer. But I also have the AC set to "circulate" where the fan runs 30 minutes each hour. It pulls the cool air up out of the basement.

I have a 2 story with the main living area on the 2nd floor and the ground floor being split between my "man cave" and woodworking shop, each about 850 sq. ft.

The man cave area is cooled with a 23K BTU window unit and it cools down quickly since I totally stripped it in 05 after Katrina deposited almost 5 ft. of water in the ground floor. All walls and between the 2 floors are now insulated with walls and ceilings covered with sheetrock.

It cools easily and allows the unit to cycle since it has a built in thermostat. That area stays much cooler than the 2nd floor since only the attic is insulated on the 2nd floor. All walls are old school plaster and lath.

This is when I'm really thankful to have a new build with spray foam insulation, double paned windows, and other energy efficient crap.

Electric bill has gone up some, but AC has no trouble keeping up. We'll see how it does in a few years lol.

I installed a window unit in my office years ago. I have so much heat generating stuff in that I had to have additional cooling. The rest of the house is usually served well on the central system. I think a new 3ton system would work well.

Gotta get one installed before they’re outlawed.

Just only use them in widows that aren’t easily visible.

I've thought about doing this to one of my living room windows that faces the woods. Take it out when people come over

I have a 25 year old home. New roof and AC unit inside and outside installed about 4 years ago. I leave it on 72 around the clock. AC has no problem keeping it there overnight and even stops running in the morning for a while. But once it hits about 11 or 12 the house starts warming up. By 6:00 pm the thermostat can’t get below 76.

The bedrooms are all fairly cool and hold the temperature well but we have a huge living room with high ceilings, 3 massive windows, and poor insulation. It was downright miserable in there and I had enough. I got a 2-hose portable ac from sams and put it in the living room. I run it from about 3-8 pm and it has made a dramatic difference. Living room is now one of the most comfortable rooms in the house. Well worth the $400 bucks. Don’t really care what my electric bill will be bc I hate sweating in my own damn house.

We live in the same house. At least both units do a great job keeping the humidity at 50%.

Southwest facing windows in the living room are tough in the summer.

Yep. I’m already shopping for new windows this fall. Gonna get my two attic fans running, and upping the R value in the attic. I’m expecting another bummer of a summer next year.

Our living area never gets any sun and we have thick custom wooden plantation blinds. So we keep one unit on 78 for living area and it stays cool with fan. Leave other unit with bedrooms at 75 during day and 71 at night. Electric bill last month was under 200$ and never hot

How big is your house and how good is your insulation?

I'm (obviously) from the MidWest, and I can't believe all the posts with setting A/C to 70~73!

We run ours ~ 76~77, will bring it down to 74~75 for guests if some prefer it cooler, or we figure we'll need a boost reserve with the added warm bodies and kids going in and out. I start to feel chilled at 75. I thought you'd be more acclimated to the heat?
